| Written in many ways, 4:20, 4/20, or simply 420 (pronounced four-twenty) is a term which originated in in North America as a discreet way to refer to the consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis culture. Phrases such as "420 friendly" sometimes appear in roommate advertisements, indicating that the current occupants are tolerant of cannabis users. It is widely accepted that the term was created by a a group of teenagers in 1971 at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California. They used to meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke cannabis at the Louis Pasteur statue. It was convenient to smoke cannabis at this time because it was after school and a while before work. The term became part of their group's salute, "420 Louis!", and became popularized in the late 1980s by fans of The Grateful Dead. Many cannabis users continue to observe 4:20 as a time to smoke communally, and April 20th (4th month of the year, 20th day of the month) as a day to celebrate the usage of marijuana.
