Phish fans can now legally enjoy their Phish Food with a side of PhishHead Kush. While the green mountain state has long been notorious for its copious amounts of cannabis consumption, the state’s first medical marijuana dispensaries just opened this week
One is in Burlington, and the other is in Montpelier. Both are open three days a week.
A third state-sanctioned dispensary is planned for Brandon.
These arrive two years after Vermont’s Legislature passed a law allowing medical marijuana to be dispensed under strict rules.
Each dispensary is required to grow its own product in a secure environment.
Customers must get proof from the state that they qualify to buy the drug and have to make an appointment with the dispensary before they show up. [WCAX]
While access is clearly limited to patients with severe, debilitating illnesses, it’s a step in the right direction for Vermont, which also decriminalized marijuana possession this year. Vermont joins New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts as yet another East Coast state to green light and activate dispensaries.
These states remain mostly barren and have very limited options for patients, but their slow progress is an indication of greener pastures ahead of the East Coast. You can’t keep a good plant down forever.
