Did Gary Johnson Say Marijuana Cures Ebola?

Just what did Gary Johnson mean?

Former New Mexico governor and one-time presidential candidate Gary Johnson is in the news after comments he made in an interview suggesting the marijuana might provide a cure for Ebola. Johnson is the president and CEO of Cannabis Sativa Inc., a company that produces medical and recreational marijuana.

Appearing on Monday with Fox News’ Stuart Varney, Johnson, a Libertarian, was asked by Varney about how the U.S. government is handling the Ebola crisis.

Johnson said his company believes marijuana can be used to treat Ebola and that government bureaucracy is preventing researchers from exploring the use of marijuana as a treatment for the deadly virus.

“We actually believe we have efficacy with regard to treating Ebola,” said Johnson, prompting Varney to interrupt him and seek clarification. He accused Johnson of overstating marijuana’s medicinal benefits to boost his company’s earning potential.

  1. Marijuana would help the nausea and reduce the stress from the diarrhea. Marijuana has antiviral properties that could assist the bodies natural healing process. Ebola kills 7 out of 10 who are infected. It is a horrible way to die, slowly, painfully, likely to infect and cause the death of anyone who touches touches you. The euphoria, the feeling of well being that marijuana causes would give the suffering peace of mind and help them want to live.

  2. Yeah I don’t know about that…

Something tells me that the virus capable of wiping out humanity isn’t going to be cured by Ganja…

      • I just find it hard to believe that a virus that literally causes your body to … melt… can be combated with getting high. I mean… it’d be amazing if I was wrong.

        • But…again jiggle…you are wrong, and I don’t mean that in an insulting manner. I mean it as a matter of fact.

Seems to me there is some kind of stigma concerning you and Cannabis. When you say things like, “I just find it hard to believe that [ebola] can be combated with getting high.”

The fact that you describe it as “getting high,” tells me a lot. Again, no offense, but it’s not about “getting high.” It’s about what “is” and what “isn’t” medicine according to people like the CDC and DEA.

When you keep up with the traditional thinking, and I mean “Cannabis/Marijuana is drugs and will kill brain cells and has no medicinal value,” you instantly lose the argument because you aren’t talking about the Endocannabinoid system within our bodies. You aren’t talking about how the body is Created to accept THC and CBD. You are repeating a sentence that you were given in school ad nauseum. Again, I’m not insulting you. You were “educated” to believe what I just said and if you didn’t “believe” it, you were labeled either “druggie” or “conspiracy theorist.”

Imagine this as a comparison, Jiggle: what if you knew the fact that 2 + 2 = 4 ONLY THAT IN SCHOOL they tell you, “if you answer 4, you are wrong.” But the reason your teacher gave you for the wrong answer on purpose was for “National Security” and he/she had no other answer other than that?

That is exactly what is happening now. Scientist left and right are TRYING to get the FDA and DEA to allow an “official study” for use in Western Medicine and to market it legally.

I hope that made a little sense.

          • I’m probably the biggest proponent of Cannabis out there. Every day I check 3 websites about 100 times a day and comment frequently on youtube postings under Direshadow. I understand the medicinal properties of Marijuana, but as a flat out “cure” for something like ebola.

It just seems… way to far-fetched.

          • Well, let’s get an official study started, shall we? I think that would solve both of our claims, would it not?

  3. It is well known that marijuana saves babies of dying from seizures. It just so happens that seizures are what kills during the final stage of Ebola. There should be an emergency executive order to legalize marijuana so people can grow it in their backyard.

  4. The fastest way to get marijuana legalization is to educate police departments on alternate methods to seize property under civil asset forfeiture.

  5. Let me be clear about this, Ebola DOESN’T kill people. The body’s immune response to Ebola is what kills people. The immune system releases proinflammatory cytokines in response to viral infections which cause immune cells to gather in infected areas. Activation of these immune cells causes inflammation and the the further release of cytokines. Aggregation of these immune cells can bock airways and essentially strangle the person infected. This process is called a “cytokine cascade” or “cytokine storm”. This process is what underlies death in many viral infections, including the 50-100 million people killed in the 1918 flu pandemic.

Cannabinoids have been shown to inhibit this process by limiting release of the proinflammatory cytokines which trigger activation of immune cells. While Cannabis is not preventative for viruses but it is likely the best way to prevent death associated with the immune response to viruses such as Ebola, which cause death due to cytokine storm. Cannabinoids have also been shown to reduce viral loads directly but this would likely have less impact on the acute effects of Ebola induced immune responses.

  6. Jesus T**** F****** Christ, you people are so goddamn stupid. You’re just as bad as people who say marijuana will kill you, now you’re saying completely obvious BS like it will cure ebola?
