And God said “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.” ~ Genesis 1:29
Sounding like the setup for a crude joke that offends – a rabbi, a priest and a self-identified “conservative homosexual atheist” sit down and get high. But in this Seattle-based video, rather than ending with an off-color punchline, the trio ends up discussing philosophy, religion and one of God’s finer creations – cannabis.
Filmed in the Evergreen State of Washington, where adult-use marijuana is perfectly legal, Rabbi Jim Mirel, Rev. Chris Schuller, and Carlos Dillard, an ex-Southern Baptist/Roman Catholic-turned-Atheist, sit down to puff, puff, pass — while connecting spiritually.
Abstinent for years, both the priest and the rabbi acknowledged they’ve smoked before. Conversely, Carlos explained he’d just got high about an hour before the interview.
After explaining their collective backgrounds and enjoying a few relaxing bong hits, Dillard asked Rev. Schuller a rather intriguing question, “What does your religion say about marijuana?” The Episcopal priest confessed:
“Yeah, I would say the majority of people who self-identify as Christians, they’re probably not too down on smoking marijuana. There’s no biblical precedent for this really, although I have to say I’ve known thousands of Episcopalians and plenty of them smoke dope.”
Carefully correcting Rev. Schuller’s verbal faux pas, Dillard pointed out the word “dope” has a negative connotation in today’s world and that “we’re about weed here.”
About 15 minutes after taking a fat bong hit and a few rips off a joint, the conversation turned spiritual, leaving the rabbi pontificating about the intrinsic value of cannabis. “If it helps you become a better person, if it lifts you up, gives you a new view of life, it’s a very positive thing.”
Shalom, Amen, and Hell Yeah.
