So today i decided to bleach my hair with a 40 and powder bleach. Left in until yellow/white. My normal hair color is light/medium brown, 1 1/8" on top and 1/4" on sides and back. Rinsed with clarifing shampoo dried then wella dye with 20 developer. Problem is my hair now has a tint of reddish/orange and doesnt look natural brown. I followed all your instrustions and used all product suggested including (neutrual) dye. Left the dye in for 25 mins. What should I do? Redye again? Is my hair too short to hold the exact color? I massaged the dye in and didnt use a bottle to apply. Maybe I didnt hit the roots. When would you suggest (if i have to) redye? Im gonna give my head a couple of days off anyway. Test not for a week.

The hair color didn't take the whole way. What color did you use exactly? If you want light brown you should use about a 7n. Use a 10 volume developer (it's more likely to absorb into your hair) and leave it on for 35 to 40 minutes. don't be scared to leave it on for 40 minutes...it won't damage your hair if it's just deposit color (as opposed to bleach which is a lift). Your hair length has nothing to do with how your hair accepts the dye.

Thanks for responding. I used 511/5N. I think Im going to bleach once more and use a 4 all over the head? I guess my hair was darker than what was suggested to me (the girl at sallys). maybe a 10 volume with it? I only really want to bleach the top 1/2" of the top of my head since it's the longest and most likely to be dirty. Will the new (shade darker) color show up differently on the bleached hair as apposed to the non bleached (but currently 5N) on the back of my head? Do you apply the dye with the bottle and then massage in? I didnt use it the first time. Sorry for all the questions! | |

I actually prefer a bowl and a brush for my mixing, I think its alot easier. especially for your length of hair. its short enough to just paint it. Just color small pieces at a time. But I'm trained, if you are comfortable with a bottle use that, but use something. these tools are made to help you color all of your hair without missing spots. The bleached hair does react differently than natural, because you have damaged it. The most obvious way it acts different, is it will soak the hair dye up differently. I didn't realize you were tryhing to jump to such a dark color, which makes sense for it to only take halfway. Basically, you cant jump more than 3 shades without whats called a filler....to make this simpler for you : if you dye your hair again without bleaching it, it will look normal. If you bleach again you may have to redye twice. There is hardly any way for me to go into fillers without being pretty confusing. Its basically too big of a jump to go from a 9 or 10 (bleach blond) to a medium brown(like a 4 or 5) so you have to put a step in the middle. In your color only taking halfway, you do put the step in the middle, so if you dye again you are only going from reddish to brown, which is a much smaller step. Let me know if that doesnt make sense, I will try to explain it better. Using a 4 is probably fine, it may look almost black at first... I personally use a 4 over bleached hair and its pretty dark brown. *after you apply it, its a good idea to massage it in, but do not massage the scalp a whole lot, try to keep your massage on just the hair, your scalp can become irritated. just be gentle.

my original hair might have had some red included with the brown (because of my scottish background) maybe this is what caused the look now on top of the fact i went too many shades without a filler. Should i use a ash color brown dye to cancel this out or should one more dye of 4-5 natural be good enough to cancel the red? I almost wish I went to the salon!

I would suggest a 4 or 5 neutral again. Especially if youhad some red in the first place. i have a hard time suggesting ash colors that arent mixed with something else. they gray out easily on bleached hair and are kind of hard to use to make things look natural. I think just another deposit of neutral color will be the easiest solution. I do always suggest going to a salon. The cheaper way is definitely the harder way and its hard to help much without seeing your hair. If its still too red after this dye, let me know, but based on what youve said it should be fine.

so i redyed it today with the 5 neutral and left it in for 40 mins. it is diffinetly darker which i like, but there still is a very small bit of red tint (red wine color) in certain light. im going to see some friends tonight that I havent told about the bleach/redye and see if they mention anything. I know jerry g recommends 2 bleach redyes but this has me nervous. if i decide to do it again, i will go to the salon. any suggestions?

My recommendation is based on heavy use. I really like three for the chronic user. You'll have to decide for yourself what level of treatment you are comfortable with...
