Hi Sec (or anybody else with knowledge on this subject),

It seems that there is no exact science as to how much hair is collected. Some people get more collected than others.

I understand that it's a ratio..so..is there a way they weigh or measure the hair before analyzing it? Can having more hair collected than necessary effect a hair test?

I think I found the answer to this.

Any excess hair is stored in the chain of custody envelope.

So, I'm assuming they only use what they need to do the test, and leave any excess hair out.

I'm just curious about "what they need." Like..to test for each drug do they need 10mg of hair, or something like that? So, a 5 panel would require 50mg of hair, and the rest is put back in the package?

Mnimum hair requested is about the thickness of a pencil lead, 1.5 inches long. Another way to look at it is:

50 strands of hair, 1.5 inches long. If your hair is only 3/4 inches long, then they need 100 strands.

The only reason I was curious is because I had a personal test done before the real one. The real test collector took at least 10 times more hair than the personal collector. I'm being conservative by saying 10 times..it could easily be more.

Yeah, they do that sometimes. IF they collect too little hair, send it to the lab and the lab rejects it, then the collector has to undergo re-training. It is easier to collect too much hair than to take a 2 hour course over again.

when i had my done the lady pulled out like a piece of foil that was bout 3 inches long and a 1 inch wide folded in half and she said they need to fill that length wise! she didnt really say anything about volume!

the length of hair is as long as your hair is. The collector cannot cut the length of hair.

Yeah, the one thing I was happy about is that I'm pretty sure they wont call me back because they need more hair!

One thing I'm wondering about, and I'm not sure if you know this, is the process at the lab.

So, the tech. gets the foil packet at the lab. Do they open it and only take out the amount needed to conduct the test? Is it a certain weight, or a number of strands?
