My hair is about 3 inches long, they only need 1 1/2 inches for the 90 day test, is there any chance the lab won't know which end was closest to the scalp and test the wrong end, the tips could have small traces left in it......

No way; if you want to back up this statement, yoink a piece of hair out of your head and you should see a small little root of lighter color at one end; this is the start of the hair follicle, and they measure from their outward and use that portion of your hair

the hair was cut not pulled out of my scalp, so they wont see the lighter end that was pulled from my scalp....

true, but they will be able to tell which end has been growing out of the scalp for a longer extended period of time; for this reason, they will be able to distinguish the newer part of the hair follicle, and this is the part they will test.

I know I know, hair testing is inaccurate and at best still developmental, but labs are not going to do something as haphazard as using the wrong portion of the hair follicle; the testing however, is another matter altogether; but be ready, because most places are going to be changing over to this methodology in the years to come; and since the gov't is pushing hair testing, you are going to see this spill over into the private lab communities in the end; the labs are getting hip to the fact that there are ways to beat the urine test, but the hair test is very very hard to fool, even using methods on here, which is why suggestions to passing hair tests are far and few between, at best.
