Default Question... need reply ASAP

Hey everyone, hows it going? The ambulance corps that I am a member of is having their annual blood drive, and I would really like to donate. I have never done it before, as you must be 17, but I am now permitted. My question is; do they test the blood? If so, will anything happen to me? Or will they discard it? If not, will it be a problem to the receiver of the blood (healthwise)?

thank you

P.S. I appologize for the thread title. I know "question" is rather broad, and I assume less people will view the thread, but it doesn't appear that I can edit the title on my own.
Additionally, I thought I should add: For the past 3 weeks I have smoked everyday, probably 2-3 times per day. Prior to that it was once a week, not much more, and prior to this past summer it was once or twice a month, though I know that THC isn't in my system any longer.

They will not test your blood for THC...

If you wait a few days, there will be no THC in your blood...

I always thought they tested blood for communicable diseases and for drugs, especially prior to giving the blood to a recipient?

I don't think it will come back on you, but I thought donated blood was tested?
...???...

I guess they don't, they only ask about drugs taken via syringe. They prick your finger to test for iron and stuff prior to taking the blood though.

They do. I am a blood donor and my blood is always tainted. They continue to recruit me for future donations. I'm not sure what the requirements are about specific drugs. Think about it, though... people are taking all kinds of drugs - ibuprofen, Tylenol, nicotene, caffeine, sleeping pills, anti-depressants, etc. I imagine that THC would be similar in that respect.

Why are you worried if the blood donation showed you smoke, anyway? There are privacy laws that protect you. Blood donation information is protected under the HIPPA laws. So don't worry about that.

I'm going to do a little research on this. I'm curious.

I found an excellent article that explains it and one of the sources quoted is a Red Cross worker.

Ahh, okay yeah, I wasn't sure if there was any law protecting me and my donation. Perfect article too by the way. That definitely answered my question.
Thanks everyone for your help...
See this is why I enjoy browsing these forums, people provide factual help and advice, unlike some other boards where members advise others based on what they heard from their plumber's brother's uncle's cat-sitter.
