Hello, I have a question about a hair test for a Federal Government Job... Well, I have been using Marijuana and some prescription pills off on and for years... I have been smoking lightly the last 6 months or so... I want to go into the Police Academy within the next year... What I'm worried about is that I know they do a hair test... I know that most hair tests only go back for 90 - 120 days from what I have read on the internet... My question is... Since this is a Law Enforcement job... Will they check further back than 90 - 120 days in their hair tests... Can they look further back... Like several years?... Or is it just a standard 90 day test... If anyone has any information on the subject... I would defiantly appreciate it!...

MobMan1987, here's the way I understand it. The testing window is targeted at 90 days. Hypothetically, they could go back farther (taking a longer sampling of hair.) but THC metabolites begin to degrade after 90 days and accuracy in testing becomes questionable beyond that point.

I've heard that the government dictates the 90-day timeframe, which would make sense from a legal standpoint, given that results taken from beyond that point could potentially be disputable as highly unreliable (in a court of law). The government realizing this, most likely wants to keep any unnecessary litigation to a minimum. Again though, that's what I've 'heard' and I've not read anything to substantiate that....so take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the reply Mastese... What you said makes alot of sense really... I mean it seems like every police department has some kind of complaint pending anymore... Plus the government has perfected covering their own ass... I generally keep my hair pretty short too... So I guess that should help somewhat... I suppose the next time I want a buzz I better drink a Bud instead of smoking a bud right? lol... And again... Thanks for the info my friend!...

How long have you been clean for? You may want to do some research (see results thread, in particular) to see if you need to apply some sort of treatment regimen to ensure you pass. The cut-off has been generally found to be 3 sessions in the past 90 days. So if you've indulged 3 or more times since approximately December 1, 2007, you may want to see about investing some time in a little prep-work.

If needed, first look into some similar situations as to your own...then come back and ask for any clarification.
