I know Jerry's knowledge isn't that great as far as relaxers go, but I was wondering if anyone else had an opinion.

From what I understand, relaxer is a strong alkaline solution that does a number on the protein structure of the hair.

In any case, both bleach and relaxers are strong bases, and both extensively damage the hair. Any opinions on which one is more effective at doing so?

You can do multiple bleach and redyes within a couple of days, you can not do several relaxers within a number of days, your hair would literally fall out.

Relaxers were made specifically to break the outer cuticle layer of the hair, which is naturally more curly in certain ethnicities (blacks, jews, etc.). Once you've broken the cuticle bond, in theory you should be free to wash away impurities.

Im a heavy smoker, I used a relaxer a day before the test, along with a dye and some other commerical and the mac method. I will def. keep the board updated on my results.

RELAXERS. I can't believe people use baking soda!!!!!!!!! It is critical to break down your hair cuticle and expose that cortex allowing a binding agent to rid the metabolites built up in the hair. Renae is right (blacks, jews, ect...) have thick hair. Sodium hydroxide (lye) is a pretty harsh chemical yet is used commonly for Hair straightening/TR treatment services. This requires “Speed of hands”, especially sodium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide (recommended for lighter thinner hair) hair relaxing systems. It is also important to remember that the chemical action of sodium hydroxide is irreversible. I AM DOING THIS PROCESS NOW. If you want to check it out check out Jangles method.

Can't seem to find a relaxer w/ Lye... I'll I can find are Lye-Free... But from what I read, the chemicals in Lye-free are just as harsh... I am trying to avoid the Bleach-redye process.. thinking about relaxers...

Most relaxers that you will be able to purchase are all lye free. It still will do the needed damage to your hair. And Rena I am so glad that someone else said that you CAN NOT relax your hair more then once in a short time frame with out actually losing your hair
