Ok, here's the story: I'm 36, 6'0", 195 lbs, medium metabolism, brown hair. I have a pre employment hair test that I can probably hold off until Monday. I smoked about half of a joint on Feb 1 so I'll be about 90 days clean for the test. I generally have smoked once a month before that. So, I'm a light smoker and I should probably be ok, but I'm also bald so they'll be taking body hair which worries me.


The posts I've read say that this is a bad thing, body hair grows slower, so there is a longer history there. I have read that the tester will mark where on the body the hair comes from, so do they take into account the fact that they may collect a year's worth of metabolites or are the metabolite levels still the bottom line?


Anyway, my tentative plan is to trim my chest hair to 0.5” or so to try to force them to take pit hair, since it seems that it would be easier to treat my pits than my whole chest. So what type of treatment do you think will do the trick since I'm a light smoker? Maccujo (how many times)? Bleach and redye two times? Maybe just paste, Toxin Wash and Zydot? PG shampoo? Which is harder on the skin, Macujo or bleach and redye? I obviously need to pass the test, but I'm also worried about going to the test with some jacked up chemical burns on my pits and/or chest.


I have a medium amount of hair on my arms and legs, do you think there is a chance they would shave some arm or leg hair instead of pits or chest?


I know there are a lot of questions here, but it seems like body hair testing isn't as straightforward as testing hair from the head. I'm also a scientist so I think that its pretty cool that the gurus here have documented their methods and are collecting data about how well they work to share with everybody else.

I've read a ton of great info here, but if anyone has some input on my particular situation, that would be great!

It has been said here before, but I will say it again...

The preferred order when selecting hair for a specimen is:

1. Head hair
2. Arm hair
3. Leg hair
4. Chest hair
5. Back hair
6. Facial hair

there is no mention in training regarding arm pit hair. I suppose you could suggest it to the collector. The collector should be wearing gloves so it shouldn't matter where the hair comes from. The collector ultimately has the choice, not the donor.

(Pubic hair is not supposed to be taken at all. For one thing, the donor must be the same sex as the collector to go into that region. There is no space on the form to document pubic hair for another).

Sec, thanks for the refresher. I guess I'll trim my arms and legs a little. I think they'd have to shave a pretty large swath to get enough arm or leg hair, so maybe they will go for the chest. Any thoughts on how much I need to do to pass the test based on my history? Thanks.

Quite frankly, I don't believe you need to do anything. Trim your leg, arm and chest hair to 1/4 inch (use a clipper). Trim your armpit hair to somewhere between 1 inch and 1-1/2 inches long. Make her have no choice but to use your pit hair. It has been long enough, but if you want to mac your pits, then it can't hurt, that's for sure.

Cool. Just FYI, I have the Quest diagnostics form in front of me, and the "Hair Source" options are: Head, Leg, Chest, Underarm, and Other. My prospective employer has also printed on the form: "Do not collect pubic samples"

Jerry is a better reference that I am, but from what I've read, bleach and redye can remove anywhere from 40-60% of the total metabolites in the hair cortex per treatment. if you want to err on the absolutely safe side (i know i always do), i'd bleach and redye my pits at least twice.

also, Sec is right. you should trim down the rest of your body hair and force the collector into taking pit hair for sure.

OK, I took the test today. Over the weekend I trimmed my chest, arm and leg hair and did a bleach and redye on my pits. I only used 20 volume developer for the bleach, but my (brown) pit hair turned bleach blond pretty quick. I redyed with a strong Wella dye with ammonia. Washed out both with Ion swimmers shampoo with PG. I also did 3 baking soda paste treatments and washed out with the swimmers shampoo. The dude at the facility was pretty shakey with the scissors and just haphazardly lopped of chunks of hair from both pits.

I figure that I was in pretty good shape to start, but I was spooked since I knew that they would have to take body hair. Hopefully the treatments put me in the clear. Thanks for all of the advice, I'll post some results by the end of the week.
