That's why libraries were invented.

Does taking in a constant stream of written information on the web constitute reading for enjoyment?

Why sure, as far as I'm concerned. If it gives you pleasure then it must be enjoyment, right?

Hey let them think books are stupid. It just means the rest of us who can and do read will be much smarter and get the better jobs. I enjoy it and if they want to call me names for something I enjoy they can all just fuck off. Someday all these kids will realize there is much more to life than their narrow minded views.

Newcarcaviar! I loved 1984, one of my favourite books of all time, I had to read it for year 12 English, man it's so good.

I havn't had much time for reading lately, but I sure do enjoy it.

I know what you mean Dankmunchies, I see that stuff on myspace all the time, so annoying

A few weeks ago I read Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five for the first time, and I loved every single page. Someone once called Kurt Vonnegut a "poor man's Thomas Pynchon" which may be true, but that doesn't cheapen him one bit - Pynchon has set the bar impossibly high to reach. Rather than a "poor man's" Pynchon, I think Vonnegut is more like "Pynchon with an extra dose of adventure."

Also, I'm currently re-reading Arthur C. Clarke's 2010: Odyssey Two in my spare time. Any fans of science fiction know that this series is required reading. I purport that for any fan of READING it be required. After all, how many SF writers can actually get the science right, add in a good deal of philosophy while acquiring a playful attitude towards prose, and still remain entirely readable for the casual bookworm? There is a reason Clarke is hailed and one of the 'big three' in science fiction.

I saw someone wearing a shirt today in school (college no less) which pretty much summed up the downfall of reading and intelligence in general.

it said DONT THINK

Oh wow. I have a shirt that says the exact opposite of that. It reads "Think! It's not illegal yet". I wear it with pride.

About reading, I'm twenty-four now, and (as my parents told me I would be) a Starving Writer (anyone know how to get an agent that's not a scamming scumbag?), and the gift of literacy was the best gift ever given to me. I was Very Young Indeed when I learned (about 1.5-2 years old. Yes, I am smart. Thank you.) with a bottle of ketchup and just went from there.

*Random tangent ranting about people talking using "text speak"*

Sorry for the distraction, back to reading. I don't understand the whole "fuck reading" thing. I feel as though the characters of the books that I've read are like old friends; re-reading the same book is like visiting them. I'm sure a lot of people share this sentiment; it can't just be me that feels this way. I enjoy their adventures and the stories that writers want to tell me. Sure I stick my nose into a lot of science fiction, and more extreme fictions (such as the short story "Guts" by Chuck Palahniuk), but really if you put a good book in front of me, I'd read it.

But at the same time, I wouldn't sweat it. Reading, and the printed word isn't dead, it's just changing. Yeah, so a lot of people say "fuck reading" and whatnot, but I'll bet you they read plenty of articles on the topics they like online. Once the iBook takes off, I'm sure a lot more people will start to read novels again. Hell, Harry Potter and Twilight have inspired younger kids to read again (which I only admit begrudgingly, in the case of Twilight. Grew up with Buffy and Bram Stoker...VAMPIRES BURN IN THE SUN. THEY DO NOT SPARKLE).

Now back to our regular scheduled program. It could be that it goes in phases, much like good music. It could be that kids will start to read again when someone else comes onto the literary scene and blows their minds*ahem!*. Then again maybe we're headed into "Idiocracy" territory, and we're all just plain fucked. Maybe the downward spiral of dumbness has finally caught up to us and pickins is just a'gunna get slim, hoss. I might think so, but then again, I'm a cynic. Anyways - that's my two cents. I hope it makes at least a little sense as I've been up for a few days now. Insomnia is "fun".
