i read 1984 several months ago which was odd because im into all sorts of poltical things like that but just never got around to it until then. i haven't read brave new world but id like to but an copy hasnt shown up at either of hte books stores i work at. recently though at work i found this book We (written by a russian, orginally written in russian i think, but i cant rember the guys name). it was written before brave new world and 1984 and orwell (who i assum read brave new world) thought huxley must have read it as well. it really good and acctually has alot of interesting ideas on routine, government control and modernisation etc. basically the world i all routine and mathmatecal. the character sort of falls in love and that messes things all up so i really agree with who ever said it before that hte love story is imporant, thinking now it doesnt seem it was done as well in 1984 but i tcoudl be because it read the other recentely

acctually if anyone else has read this id liek to make a thread to talk about it becuase this got me thinking again

Another great book associated to 1984 is called WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Its about life in a regemented totalitarian society (written during the Soviet years). The book wasnt published in Russia until 1988 because of obvious USSR censorship reasons.

I also believe Orwell used WE as an inspiration for 1984. Im about 60 pages into it, its pretty crazy book.. check it out if you like 1984.

i read 1984, animal farm and lord of the flies all for school.

1984 is pretty interesting but it can get sooo boring during some parts.

Anyway, I just picked up 1984 today. Hope to find it to be a good read like everyone is saying.

No, thats a very typical and reactionary statement. First of all, american "democracy" is typical bourgeoise democracy, therefore, its based on keeping the exploiters in power to continue the leadership of the exploited. Your rights are at the hands of the exploiters, and voting doesn't change that. I'm not a reformist, but I don't feel like preaching Marxism, so what we need is a mass reform in the economic, social, and material structure of America to represent the civil liberties which should exist.
(Though a proletarian revolution would be quite nice, like Winston trys to manifest in 1984 )

Do you think such a broad reform will happen? What would bring that about? There are an increasing number of people that feel the same way, but it's just unlikely. Typical Americans are too busy to think about changing things and from a young age they're told to never quit and never to argue. Both are good under certain circumstances. However, rules are burned into children's minds, so most never question anything, silent or aloud. They just drone on.

I liked Animal Farm more than Nineteen-Eighty-Four... although the latter was stuck in my sub-conscience for months.

I love George Orwell.
