Greatest writer of all time? wow... can't decide..... prolly isn't one.

I've been reading these authors' books lately, I highly recommend:

John Barth (Giles Goat-boy, The Sotweed Factor, Chimera)
William Gibson (Mona Lisa Overdrive, Burning Chrome, Neuromancer, Count Zero)
Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash)
Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas)
Kurt Vonnegut (Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, Breakfast of Champions, Hocus Pocus)
Anthony Burgess (Clockwork Orange)
Shakespeare (Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, The Tempest)
Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion)
Baudelaire (Les Paradis Artificiels; it's a really cool book written in the 1800's about Baudelaire's experimentation with hashish and opium)

Yes, I know I have strange taste.....

I know the name Aldous Huxley very well but never really knew too much about him or what he's written ... my dad talks about carl segan quite often, but i cannot remember anything he has told me! who wrote the book Doors of Perception?

I read Animal Farm at school, and we had to do a whole lotta sh!t for it, it was good though I guess ... I was so busy trying to finish the paper work while the rest of the class got to watch the movie!

Terence McKenna is great! Some of his stuff is hard to grasp, but I like reading the Archaic Revival by this guy. Aldous Huxley is mentioned in the book a few times ...

I think Stephen King is a bit better writer than Dean Koontz, but i like koontz, i'm on my 3rd novel by koontz. I know he can't be counted on here as one of the best . But I had to mention em because I read em, and like em.

Is this thread limited to just those who write books? There are so many forms of writting, that is why Im gonna list my idea of the greatest lyric writers.

John Lennon
Dave Matthews

Short list I know but im drawing a blank.

The Doors of Perception was written by him, by Huxley. I'm reading it at the moment, and it's great, it's marvellously written, and since I started reading it I consider "this chemical the author is talking about throughout the book" to be the only drug apart from MJ worth trying..

oh yeah and he has written Brave New World too, which is pretty much my favorite book at the moment.. I didnt find it amusing though, rather shocking and frustrating in a way.

Great authors:

Kurt Vonnegut (see "Slaughterhouse V", "Galapagos", "Timequake", and "Cat's Cradle"

Gabriel Garcia Marquez (try "100 Years of Solitude", and "Love in the Time of Cholera")

Salman Rushdie ("Satanic Verses" is brilliant)

Stephen King (my guilty pleasure... The Dark Tower series kicks serious ass, as does "Insomnia", and, of course, "The Stand")

I could go on for a while, but i'll just list a couple others...

Philip K Dick (writer of many many many sci-fi books, many of which became movies such as Blade Runner and Total Recall)

Edgar Allen Poe

Stephen Hawking ("A Brief History of Time" should be required reading)

that's all for now
