| I know this is a little tough but who do you think would be the greatest author of all time? I would personally say either George Orwell (Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies were the best) or J.R.R Tolkies (Lord of the Rings series blew me away after I read them). In fact, I've started re-reading them. Just curious to know who everyone else's is. Well, I'm off to continue with The Fellowship of the ring.

| Though not written by George Orwell (William Golding) is totally great with all of the symbolism and such. I just got done reading it a few weeks ago for the first time in about 14 years. Tolkiens works are classics. I have my fiancee reading them now (for her first time) and am going to love going to the movie, when it comes out. I am into Tom Clancy right now. I have read all the "Jack Ryan" series and am currently re-reading "Without Remorse" Daniel |

| As for fiction, Richard Harris is pretty good and there is always Victor Hugo. |

| I'm reading lord of the flies right now, its a great book. And last week i bought all 3 Lord of the Rings and The Bilbo wich i'm also reading. Other authors that i REALLY like are Hunter S. Thompson , father of the gonzo jornalism and author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", wich i read a couple months ago. I dont know if you guys heard of this one, he is the best brazillian writer ever, i if you can find some of his work at your local library (and you will) read this on "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas " by Machado de (of) Assis. and "'Quincas Borbas" is also good DM

| Any fans of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings should check out Tolkien's other masterpiece the Silmarillion. The earliest drafts of what would later become the Silmarillion were begun in 1917 and it was still uncompleted upon his death in, IIRC, 1972. His son Christopher, armed with all of his father's manuscripts and musings put together the work in a publishable form. It's only as big as one volume of the Lord of the Rings, but had it been finished it would have been much longer. It is critisized by fans of the Lord of the Rings for being to dry and reading like the Bible, but those are exactly why I love it. If you love mythology you'll love this book. It begins before the beginning of time and covers all of the events of the First Age (the Hobbit and the LotR take place at the end of the Third) and briefly covers the events of the Second and Third. No Tolkien fan should be without it.

| "Greatest author of all time" is a tough call. It's just too hard to judge something like that. Certainly very good authors which are my faves would be: Stephen King - needs no introduction; "Carrie", "Misery", "The Shining", "It" etc. Michael Chrichton - accliamed for the "Jurassic Park" novels, check out "Eaters of the Dead" too though; I love that book! Timothy Zahn - only really like his work on the Star Wars books especially the Thrawn Trilogy. pe@ce |
