| In about half a year I'm gonna graduate (woohoo.) and my english special field is "Science Fiction and Utopia, and how much of it applies to our real world" - not very original, I know. anyways, up to now I've read the following books on that topic: 1984, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (a/k/a Blade Runner, great novel), Fahrenheit 451, and I even read a Babylon 5 book by Peter David, though it's.. just for B5 fans I guess. So can anyone recommend one more really good book on that topic? And does anyone have a good synopsis, characterisation and above all interpretation on any of the aforementioned books? It would be highly appreciated! ~boodah~ | |

| Try "Giles Goat-boy" by John Barth. You might also look into the writings of Robert Heinlein, and some other books by Ray Bradbury. There's a short story by Isaac Asimov about AI producing a utopia and all the people didn't know; I forget the title, but it's the last story in "I, Robot". Did you read the original "Utopia" by Sir Thomas More? And, you HAVE to read "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess. It's very relevant to your topic. Seeing the movie (though the movie is a classic) just doesn't cut it. (It's written in a made-up slang, so you might want to keep a glossary of all the words. My copy has a glossary written in the back. You'll also need to reread the first few chapters. It's like reading Trainspotting.) I have to commend you on reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" I loooove that book so much! I actually read that before I'd ever seen Blade Runner, which is one of my favorite movies. (As a matter of fact, I was just watching Blade Runner last night... trying to convert my boyfriend to sci-fi.) Oh, yeah - have you read anything by William Gibson? If anything, it's more dystopian than utopian, but they're still dynamite novels.... | |

| Jr. Member | Since your studying sci fi check out anything by Frank Herbert (such as the Dune Chronicles) and Arthur C Clarke (the 2001 series, even though 3001 has a somewhat cheesy ending) or if you can check out some manga like Gunnm,Ghost in the Shell,Akira,Evangelion,Gundam, and of course,Five Star Stories ![]() The Stoned Philosopher ![]() |

| Thanks a lot, all of you! I just need ONE more book for my special field, though I'll have to peep all of those books yall recommended some time. @HappyMan, sounds interesting, would you bother to tell me a bit more about this book? I'd like to have at least the slightest idea of whats it about ![]() @kathleen As I've always wanted to read/watch Clockwork Orange (havent done so yet, shame on me), and you say it applies to my topic, it's Nr1 on my list at the moment. And yeah, Do Androids.. is really a fantastic book, with several "layers" so to speak.. I read it in class, matter of fact it was me who suggested this book after I had read it, I thought it'd be a good novel for the class to read cause there was a bit action in it and I didnt regard it as hard to understand.. however, a majority of my class didnt get the book's meaning, they didnt even understand what the "mood organ" and stuff was all about.. let alone Mercerism, I even had to explain Mercer and the Empathy boxes to my english teacher cause he didnt understand it!! therefore most of the class didnt find the book too good, aah it's really frustrating to read decent books in class ![]() ~boodah~ | |
