Seeing as how some talk of Tolkien has come up in other threads, I thought I'd give him one of his own.

Tolkien's a genius, what other author has created an entire history and numerous epic stories out of a language (contrary to what many think, the stories came to support the language, not the other way around).

With the movie's coming up, it'll be interesting to find out what happens. The big fans will be able to find a lot of things wrong, no matter what they do. for example, i used go to the tolkien newsgroups all the time. There was a flame war that lasted for at least 2 years, and is probably still continuing although it's been about 3 or 4 since I last checked their boards, about whether or not the Balrog has wings. It is worded ambiguously so it's tough to tell. I don't think he did, but it's open to interpretation.

Anyway, Tolkien's one of my favorite author's and an amazing linguist, he's a real genius and an innovator.

yes
Lord Of The Rings is a great book.
And I find it funny that the Hobbits have the tradition to smoke weed. In some part in the book it is mentioned, the take their pipe out and start smoking.
But if the herb is more to be like marijuana or more like tobacco they dont tell.

Their pipeweed is probably a nicotine type plant. I know that it is mentioned somewhere, but cannot find it right this second.

I still like the idea about it being weed. Munchies, bright colors, poetry, general jollyness, (the year 1420 was known for good pipe-weed).

What would you think gollum is going to look like? He was originally a "hobbit type" of creature, I wonder what they are going to do with him.

I don't know if the balrog had wings or not, but if it did, why didn't it fly out of the abyss when it and Gandalf were in their fight?

Trivia question...

Who wore the 3 rings that were never touched by Sauron?

Yeah he had wings in a cartoon of L.O.R. i saw. But it wasn't really true to the story, and it was boring.

Yeah hobbit and LOR are great, there was even a bar in the 60's named "middle earth" cuz people used to do hallucinogenics and thought they were in a tolkien-like trip in the bar.

www.lordoftherings.com

all the info can be found there.

Pipeweed was tobacco or a similar plant, not marijuana.

Personally, I loved the Silmarillion as much as the Lord of the Rings. I didn't really find it weird, but you have to understand the standpoint Tolkien wrote from.

He was writing a mythology, according to the story, he found manuscripts of the Silmarillion, The Hobbit or There and Back Again, and The Red Book of Westmarch (the Lord of the Rings), and translated them from the Quenya (I believe that was the Elvish language they were written in). He was an accomplished linguist and recognized the connection the history of a people has to the evolution of their language, which is how the stories developed.

I love greek, roman, norse, etc, mythologies, so I loved the Silmarillion, if you don't, you'll want to look elsewhere, but you're missing out on some INCREDIBLE stories.
