| I just finished reading Gaiman's American Gods last week and I can honestly say, Gaiman is probably my favorite author and American Gods is probably his best novel yet. For those unawares. Neil Gaiman began as a comic book writer who got famous doing the Sandman comic for DC|Vertigo. He has a fascination with mythology of all cultures and always ties it into his stories, thus creating a new, modern mythology. This stuff is rooted in ancient cultures, given a face lift and put into modern context. Gaiman is one of the greatest writers of the last century who has yet to break out of Cult status. American Gods was great. The story of Shadow. A man just released from prison who finds himself caught up in a plot hatched by old gods to take on and destroy the new gods. It's got the usual Gaiman sense of humor, but this is a dark book and he uses that humor sparingly. It's deeply unsettling and full of a lot of surprises. I couldn't put it down. I blazed through it in a couple of days. Read it. | |
