| A few days ago I went to the bookstore and got two books. I was only looking to grab Walden by Thoreau, but after seeing it was only $3 (!?) I got another one... fate ![]() It is called Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior. Search Yahoo! under Shambhala and you'll find a lot about it. I finished the whole book in 4 days, and read it every spare moment I had. When I started reading it, I actually had this rush, I was like 'Woah'. Everything in this basically summed up my philosophy and let me understand it more, it was all true. Anyways, it is basically a practical guide to being a good person and helping people. It is based on a Tibetan story about a place called Shambhala, an elusive enlightened society that is somewhere in the Himilayans. A legend is that at one time (Tibetans belief it is now) the world will be full of hate, and the king of Shambhala will join forces with the gods and open the gates, and basically kick Evil's ass. But that isn't what the book is about, it is just where many of the ideas where inspired. As always, I am not doing it justice at all! When I mean you should read it, I am serious. I have actually been feeling more enlightened just from it, and even went over to a Shambhala center I found downtown and saw what it was all about. Really changed me. Awesome stuff. |

| Hi, yeah I'm new here. A couple of weeks ago in english class I had to read Walden. I thought it was a pretty good book. We were later required to write an essay on what our ideal Walden would be like and why we need places like that. Strangely enough I got pretty into it. The whole point of one of those places was self-reflection and non-conformity. I looked at it in a different way than most people. They all picked these exotic far away lands. But as far as I figure, how is a place hundreds of miles away going to help you and the life that you lead? It's really not going to. I think what he ment by self-reflection is that one needs to become comfortable with his/her own environment. Kind of like self-acceptance. And as far as conformity goes, we're all conformists weather we want to admit it or not. But anyways I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth. I haven't read the other book that you spoke of but I'll take your word for it as a great book. I read a wicked lot and I'm always looking for news **** to read. *FaeRyWings*

| I've had that same book on my shelf for the past two years and have never read it! Maybe I'll start on it soon. That can't be a coincidence. |

| Ah Walden Pond in the suburbs? Man that is kinda depressing I thought that book was pretty cool, the way some chapters would seem very dry and pointless, yet all of a sudden he would say something so profound. Is Walden Pond destroyed now, or kept as some sort of landmark? |

| You're talking about Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chögyam Trungpa -- right? I bought it three weeks ago too! What a brilliant book. It convinced me to wake up early and meditate as part of my daily routine ![]() There's a second book -- almost a sequel to this one -- written by a student of his, Jeremy Hayward that I read first. It's a good book too and focuses quite a bit on fearlessness. Sacred World: The Shambhala Way to Gentleness, Bravery and power by Jeremy and Karen Hayward. "The Haywards take the reader on a journey through ordinary experience into the sacred world, uncovering obstacles to living in sacredness and exploring ways to work with these obstacles. Their meditations, personal insights, anecdotes, and mindfulness exercises guide the reader toward self- knowledge and empathy... A helpful addition to collections on Western and Eastern approaches to living." -Library Journal (from Amazon.com)

Walden Pond is protected as park of the Massachusetts state park system. It is fairly well preserved and is one of the largest treks of undeveloped land in this part of the state. However 4 million people live within 50 miles of it (half of the circle is ocean). The pond is only 15 miles outside of Boston, and is within the first ring of suburbs.....Read Thoreau's writtings about Maine and Moosehead Lake. That land still remains pretty much unbroken. | |
