songs of the damned was a great book. i havent read his "new" one tho..
at the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland OH , there is a great selection of written correspondence between he and Jan Wenner of Rolling Stone, mostly fighting over who stole what from whom. total crack up.

best!

Yup, Pages, there's been at least 2 threads on this before - but one more can only be a good thing.

420SmokerNYC - I'd say try "The Great Shark Hunt" first. It's long, but it has some great stuff in it. You might want to skip section 2 until you get really into it - it's the presidential campaign stuff - but the rest is excellent. My favorite two essays are "Freak Power in the Rockies" - an essay about his involvment in a mayoral campaign in Aspen - and "The Hashbury is the Capital of the Hippies". The latter was written first-hand (HST was actually living in the Haight-Ashbury just before the whole thing exploded) and is a brilliant article on the then-emerging hippie scene.

In an era where a "vicious greedhead" like George W. Bush has become President of America, HST's writings are more essential than ever. Long live Uncle Duke!!!
