Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas! This book is written in such a style that even non readers seem to enjoy it. I personally read the book cover to cover without putting it down. Admittedly, I'm an avid reader, but I cannot understand anyone who has even a passing interest in drugs (or a sense of humor) not enjoying this book. Hunter S. Thompson was certainly a unique man with many strange life experiences......read the book. I promise you will not regret it....even if you've previously seen the movie! IMO, the movie was great, but missed a lot of the not so obvious themes of the book. Read it!!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a great read. Another book that is simply amazing due to the author's writing style is Disco Bloodbath. Get it from a library if you want to read it though; you'll be hard pressed to find a copy in anywhere near decent condition for under $100. It is out of print and there weren't that many copies made... It isn't unheard of for first editions to go for $500. Just looked on amazon, and the lowest they have it for is $190.

This is a review from amazon:

Quote:
In 1996, New York City drug dealer and "club kid" Angel Melendez was bludgeoned, injected with Drano, dismembered, and tossed into the river. James St. James was there when the killer confessed, but before that, there were the clubs, the parties, the drugs, and the many fabulous (and some not so fabulous) outfits. Disco Bloodbath is "celebutante" St. James's story, equal parts confession and attempt at closure. This is no square-jawed detective's account of the investigation of the crime; St. James is a drug-addled clubster who wears a wedding dress out on the town and invokes Judy Garland as he talks about the scene in which he and Melendez immersed themselves before the murder. His story, despite its gruesome subject matter and frequent, shocking lucidity, has a chatty and anecdotal quality that's compelling, endearing, and unrelentingly human. --Lisa Higgins
I would say Shogun by James Clavell, but it starts out rather slow and it is around 1200 pages.. The first 100 pages seem rather unimportant, but once you get into the story it's impossible to put the book down.

A Clockwork Orange by: Anthony Burgess

I am currently reading another of his novels Honey for The Bears. A Clockwork Orange is a more enjoyable read though. You might have a little trouble picking up on the slang he uses throughout the novel.

Im into distopian novels right now. Another one I would recommend is 1984 for readability and simialarity to more mainstream books.

Seriously, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

Never have I enjoyed SMOKING so much AFTER reading. It is a very subjective read though, and very philosophical. Your mind will be blissfully racing during and after reading. It deals with different aspects of culture in ancient India during the times of Buddha and is a story of a son of a respected priest/brahmin that strays his own ways and meets all sorts of people (including Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, where the main character's name derives from) who influence his life. I read it after a near-death experience at a time in my life where I wasn't very confident of myself or sure of what I wanted to do. It gave me a renewed outlook on life and made me proud to be better off than most in this world while at the same made me question what makes people better off or happy. Siddhartha is on the "canon" as well, if you know about that.

Everyone has made pretty good suggestions so far, though.

Here is some background info about the time period and the meaning behind the name.

CLockwork orange is weird. Saw the movie and was a little bit scared.

"It's Not Easy Bein' Me "

Rodney Dangerfield wrote it. Led a interesting life, show you that you can do what you want in life.

Edit: I'm gonna check out Siddhartha, thanks for the reference.

anything by the late great Robert Heinlein ...

...but I would definitely reccomend STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND as an adult book (it even has sex in it!) ...or FARMERS FREEHOLD (as a juvenile book -- about 200 pags and no sex)...

OOPSIE, edit...Farmer's Freehold is no juve ...I was thinking of Farmer in the Sky

but all of Heileins are good -- they are Sci-Fi
