Default Catcher in the Rye

I'm sure many, many people here have read this classic. I'm also sure there is already a thread on it, but I ain't look through hundreds of pages of threads to find it.

Post your opinions on the novel, whatever you want.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. The ending was pretty interesting, nothing exciting, it leaves the reader with a feeling of peacefulness, in my opinion. What did everyone else think?

I read it in 9th grade. In all honesty, I like reading, I'm not one of the kids who loathes to read anything, but THAT BOOK SUCKED.

It was the most boring, uncreative book I have ever read.....

I didn't find the book to be all that bad. Although, we did watch the movie also, and now that was the most boring thing I've ever seen. It's up there with Fahrenheit 451.

kornygirl... there is no movie... at least there shouldn't be. JD salinger would have a fit! (he wouldn't sell the rights.)

I loved it when I first read it in freshman year (outside of school, though), but I read it again pretty recently and felt even better about it. Hard not to find some way to identify with Holden. It's probably in my top 5 favorites.

Same here. If you can't identify with holden then something is going wrong with you and you are not a normal teenager.

I loved this book when I was younger. Oddly enough I never had the urge to kill John Lennon. Working class hero is a great song though.

I was actually thinking about posting a thread on this book. I assume you were inspired by the John Lennon and his killer special on Friday night. I havent read it but I would like to if it is good. What is it about, and for those who have read it, would you suggest it?

I actually didn't see that special, I was just baked and staring at the book, so I'm like **** I should make a thread.

I would suggest you read it; it's not difficult, nor is it long, so even if you don't end up liking it you will not have wasted much time. It's about a part of a teenager's life where he has crazy thoughts and perceptions etc. Read it and you'll find out.

Oh nothing wrong with if you don't identify with Holden. You might be a normal teenager Female -- .

I thought the book was about a self indulgent non-empathic narcissist with a strange Oedipal fixation on his pre-adolescent sister

...but what do I know?

Never caught the Oedipal fixation with his sister. At least not in that fashion. Thought it was more Holden's longing to connect with someone in a real and non "phoney" way, and his yearning for his own loss of imagined innocence.

I still think it's a strange book to make young teenagers read.
