| Anybody reading these? The Aubrey/Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian are the ones that the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" is based off of. I just finished book 12, "The Letter of Marque" this week and will by the next one soon. You probably need to be something of a history buff to appreciate them, but this is one of the best series I've ever read. |

| I have read about 10 of them out of order, I really enjoy maturin's extensive drug use and the whole description of for example eating coca leaves or taking drops of laudinum. The whole series is fantastic and I love the sea battles. another fun series not involving ships, but british riflemen of the same era is Bernard Cornwell's sharpe's rifles series, he also wrote a trilogy on the civil war that takes place in virginia uh... the Nathaniel Starbuck chronicles or something |
