this book is pretty crazy so far (about half way through)
i respect the majority of the figureheads of the civil rights movement, and i am glad to see what has come out of it, but goddamn it, after 11 years of school im just sick of learning about it!!
being all that as it may, this book is a refreshingly different look at it. written by a convicted rapist, eldrige cleaver it relates the story of how he found out who he really was, and how viewing the whole of civil rights was completley different from inside jail than anywhere else.
its not pretty either. while we get an school version, complete with happy stuff like effective bus boycotts and effective cafeteria sit-ins, cleaver reveals the gritty stuff that shocked the public when it was written.

if you are tired of the way civil rights is taught and you want an engaging read, check it out.
