It is an attempt to rationalize Bin Laden as being insane. By potraying him in such a humorus fasion we can see him as the inhuman monster we want. Because it is hard for us to see that attack on the WTC as a rational act, we need to create the image of a dancing madman hidding in the boonies. Same reason people use 'evil' when describing the man. It is a method to distance his actions from our image of morality......of course I may be just tired.

You may be tired, but you're right on the money. Notice in all of Bush's speeches, he always refers to the "evildoers". He's got to keep a strict dicotomy between "us" (civilization, morality, good) and "them" (barbarians, immoral and evil) going in the minds of Americans. It's a tried-and-true tactic that's been around for a long time.

Yes, and the same is true for the radical elements the U.S. is at war with. Calling the U.S. the great Satan may sound absurd to Americans but it sits well with the uneducated masses in the middle east.
