Default The United States and China join the international fusion project

Heres the link

The US and China have offically entered the ITER (International Thermonuclear Energy Reactor) project. The US, China, Canada, the European Union, Japan and the Russian Federation, are now all going to work together on a 5 billion dollar international project to develope clean fusion power and It could be available by the middle of this century.

The project is the largest international science project excluding the International Space Station. And 1kg of the fuel used in a fusion power plant would equal 10,000,000kg of power that you would get from burning fossile fuels.

$5 billion?? That's cheap!! Especially for an international project.

Look at the military's budget.

It's a great project, though. [ECHO FX] This could be the start of a new era! [/ECHO]

To use fusion reactions as an energy source, it is necessary to heat a gas to temperatures exceeding 100 million Celsius - many times hotter than the centre of the Sun. At these temperatures, the gas becomes a plasma.
Damn that's hot. That's over 180 million degrees Fahrenheit!

That's just ridiculous. I can't even possibly comprehend how hot that would feel. I wouldn't even be able to physically get anywhere near close enough to touch it.

Wow.

How in the hell would they even contain it? Magnetic fields? Couldn't some of the heat leak out?

Yeah, $5 billion is kind of cheap for a project like that.

Yup, its so hot there is no known substance that can contain it so they accualy have to float it using magnets so none of it comes in contact with the chamber walls.

Nasa has accually been trying to make a spacecraft engine that uses this same plasma technology.
