They're not called "midget ponies" they're known as "miniature horses." The unique thing about them is that they are in perfect proportion with regular horses, just a miniaturized version.

They are said to make really great guides for the blind and disabled, though I'm not sure if I would agree, only because having been around horses myself, I know how easily they spook. A rearing miniature horse is just tall enough to cause some serious damage - especially to a person with limited abilities.

I don't see how it would be funny that they're slaughtered every year, but to each his own I guess. Maybe if I was stoned, I'd find humor in it, but it's doubtful. Mini horses are just about the cutest things on the planet, and so fun for kids because they can be ridden or trained to pull carts. They're also showed extensively, being judged on both conformation and over fences.

Check this out, they can jump REALLY high for their size. Here's a little guy clearing a 34" (almost 3 foot!) jump:

There is some dude that my dad knows that breeds these and sells them. Apparently they are high dollar horses pound for pound at like $7,000 or something (I couldve made that up

). Ive gone out to his house (BTW he is madd rich from these) and he has like 30 of them at at a time. I cant really remember what they are used for or their actual breed name, but they are so cool.
