Default The Men That Don't Fit In (Part 2)

So this is a poem by Robert Service (the first 4 verses) and I added 4 of my own verses on the end.

I think the original poem is the bomb...really captures how I feel sometimes I can't wait to get out and see the world but gotta finish college first!

The Men that Don’t Fit In

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.

If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.

He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.

---Robert Service

The Men That Don't Fit In (Part 2)

He wants a life that’s rich and full,
And one with no regrets,
For when he reaches the end of his road,
He knows he won’t forget.
That each and every man’s value and worth,
Are made of his own decisions,
And to smile proudly at the end of it all,
Is his life’s only true ambition.

For it’s not the ones with piles of gold,
Who leave this world the richest,
It’s those who’ve followed their heart’s desires,
Through the thickest and the thinnest.
And those gypsy men who don’t fit in,
Have known this all along,
Which is why they’ve spent those countless nights,
Chasing the Siren’s song.

Most don’t know why it started,
Or even how long ago,
But it gives a desperate pull inside,
A pull to get up and go.
To find what they’ve been looking for,
Whatever that may be,
And is that something actually real,
Or the need to feel you’re free?

But we all must die, this is true,
And we don’t all feel the same,
Some wish they had but one more chance,
To play this fateful game.
But when the game is done and through,
It’s the men that don’t fit in,
Who look back on their trivial lives,
And smile with a grin.

The 4 verses I wrote kind of reflect the way I look at the world right now; basically your life is what you make it out to be. Money isn't everything and you make it as important in your life as you want it to be (to a certain extent). And personally I have no idea whats going to happen to me when I die so I just want to live my life how I want and be a good person. That plus the fact that I've had the travel bug pretty hardcore for the last year or two makes this poem mean a lot more, especially the one by Service...pretty much describes how I've felt for a while now...

Yea so lemme know what ya think about the original and my version, comments are appreciated. I think I'm gonna try to come up with a tattoo from the original poem so if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated...i was thinking maybe "Legion Lost" somewhere in Old English letters.

By the way this guy did the same but made a Christian version of Part 2 which was where I got the idea for a Part 2. If you liked the original or mine I recommend reading it, its pretty good.

Peace!
