Default A Few Things I've Written

Thought I'd post a few of my writings...a short essay sort of thing, a few poems, and a couple of haiku.

Nocturnal Reflections

Darkness comes early at this time of year...the light seems to drop out of the day with the suddenness of a vast, invisible hand throwing a titanic switch and breaking the circuit that controls the sun. Not that I mind...I've always preferred the night anyway.

Perhaps because it seems to hold an infinite array of possibilities...far more than bright day ever could. At night, your darkest fears and most forbidden desires all seem closer...and anything seems possible.

Then, there's the beauty of the night...the stars overhead looking like nothing so much as diamonds, carelessly tossed, hard and glittering against a backdrop of deepest blue-black velvet.
And even places where you can't see the stars are more beautiful, more inviting...the city an oasis of light, proud spires lit with incandescence thrusting themselves arrogantly to the sky, like one would imagine the fingers of God.

Sometimes I'm forced to wonder how anyone can truly enjoy the daytime. In comparison with night, it's like a thrift store painting next to a Rembrandt. (Of course, that's just my opinion...and what do I know?)

Default A poem.

Storm
The wind sings through the trees
With an almost human pitch
And the rain on the roof
Sounds like the deranged hammering
Of a thousand meth-crazed carpenters.
Dim, dead grey light glints dully
On the surface of puddled water
And the snapping of dead branches
Reminds me of breaking bones.
Nature is a harsh, unforgiving *****
And I don't want to risk her wrath...
I think I won't be going out today
After all.

Default Another poem.

Inspired by watching late-night TV.

Entertainment At Your Fingertips

Jesus loves you and needs your money...
Or so says the purple-haired zealot
Lost beneath six inches of bad makeup
Screaming out of my TV set
In the wide-eyed insomniac dawn.
While on CNN they're talking about Clinton,
And Monica's stained blue dress...
Drooling over the details
With a lascivious gleam in their eyes...
Then, there's the shopping channel.
Extolling the virtues of some useless piece of junk,
Portable, rechargable, handy and convenient
And YOURS for only $59.95...
And suddenly, I understand why Elvis did it,
And I wish I had a .357 right now myself.

Default Haiku

These were inspired by trendy patriotism and our War on Some Terrorists.

Bloody violence
War becomes entertainment
This is CNN.
(Nov. '01)

Flags spring up all over
Patriotism run rampant
Just another fad.
