| The Perfect Plum I had a dream last night. I and the Dalai Lama were standing by a plum tree thick in large red plums. Most were ripe. Some had fallen from the tree already and had begun to rot. I appeared as a young boy, holding his stomach in hunger, malnourished, peering worried and hurriedly into the tree's foliage. The Dalai Lama, who had been near by all along, quietly observing me unnoticed, at last put his hand on my shoulder. Startled, I turned my head and he caught my eyes. He was smiling an easy but all knowing smile. He asked, "What are you doing?" I said that I was searching for the perfect plum to eat on this tree. He asked if I had found it. I frowned and replied that every time I spotted what had at first appeared to be the perfect fruit, that it was just out of reach or that upon closer inspection it was flawed. The Dalai Lama smiled wider and he asked me how long I had been searching for this perfect fruit. I said I wasn't sure, I had lost track of time. He said he had been patiently watching me search this same tree for almost a year without eating a single thing. He continued to smile. "Why do you starve yourself looking for perfect plums when they are all perfect? Of what consequence are the small blemishes to taste and food quality? And what will you do should you happen to find your idea of the perfect plum? Eat it and it will be gone. Hold on to it too long and it will rot. And why do you limit your search to this one tree when you stand in a plum orchard in an apple orchard in a pear orchard? With his left hand still on my shoulder, he reached into the tree with his right and came out with a fat red plum... "See", he said with a big grin, "the perfect plum". As he bit into it, juice squirted out onto one of the lenses of his glasses and into his eye which made him wince. He laughed a muffled laugh taking care not to spit out the bite he had just taken. I chose a plum and joined him in laughter as I savored the sweetness of the juicy red plum. | |
