Default question

I was wondering if anyone knew the average salary of a writer. I mean what is determined by how much money you get paid. I'm sure that the more books you sell, the more cash. But do they not give you an advance amount when you first get published? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

i dont believe so, there are so many people who have their books published and i think the publisher would lose a lot of money if they fronted money just for signing

Hello,

Well, theres no exact salary for a writer, I mean of course King, Rice, and others with such popularity just rack up tons of cash. But that's because they are who they are.

For new writers. First you gotta find the agents, second you gotta pay them, third, they'll get a small percent of what you earn. As well as the publishing/distribution companies. You also gotta pay editors. Then you got the promotions, the signings, etc. In the end you spend more money on getting it published, then what you earned while it's published and out there.

Now what I recommend to writers who are just starting, I recommend going through companies such as Iuniverse (http://www.iuniverse.com/publish/), your profit % is not so great, but still your not gonna gain much if your go through agents and so forth. Companies like this help you out through a good amount of the steps, yes they are a company, so they cost money, but atleast its a promising release.

Now becoming a best selling author is even harder than becoming a pop-star. And that's only with writing short stories, novels, etc. Not including scripting, scripting, well, that's a pain, but no need to sweat it (ill get into that later), but back to writing. Your not gonna hit a home-runner right off the bat for the first time, sorry, to shoot you down, just thats truth.

My first actual book, a collection of 10 short stories will be released in another year or so. How i'm getting it sold, yes I'll do signings, yes I'll pay for the promotions, but also, spreading the word to all the people I know personally to buy it, and to get them to spread the word themselves, I myself will by copies of my own and sell them to the libraries in my area.

My plan is not all to original, lots of people do it, and the best, if you work in a restuarant you can promote it there too, if you know lots of people in the restuarant business like I do, then your set, promoting is at each restuarant you can.

So, for anyone who is wanting to get published, I recommend trying that company out, IUniverse, and of course, try having a plan, I can't promise you it will work 100%, cause this is my first actual book being released, the others that i have released in the past couple of years have been in magazines and so forth, so I don't exactly know if it's gonna work out.

good luck, and later...

Asalamalakim Earth.
