I had to write this for english class, it had to relate to the odyssey in some way. It is the only poam I have ever written that I actually like so I thought I would share.


Unnecessary Demise

Gas masked men,
like suitors in Odysseus’ den.
Eating their chow,
sweat forming on their brow.
No idea their death has come,
no idea they’re almost done.
Something in the road, little kid,
he cuts off escape, like Odysseus did.
They’re getting nervous, the truck pulls over,
thinking about home, with fields of clover.
Truck trips the wire,
consequences are dire.
Fire everywhere, instant hell,
like the dying suitors, things hadn’t gone well.
Soldiers stumbling around missing arms and legs,
about to die like the ones great Odysseus killed, even though they begged.
Fire-fight ensues, I guess they won,
but what was the cost and what had they died for when it was done.
Their lives are over, families in tears,
they died for oil, enough for just a few years.
Was it worth it, you decide,
what I know…
I wouldn’t trade their lives, so I can put cheap gas in my ride.
