| so i'm taking english 101 this summer at a community college because i couldnt fit an english class into my freshman year of college. as extra credit we could write a response to al gore's movie: an inconvienent truth. i just thought it might be able to open an interesting discussion about global warming and whats happening in the world. so heres what i wrote. I have been sitting staring at my computer thinking and mulling over what I could say about this film and/or the environment that could be of any importance or that hasn’t already been said. I can’t. But I will try to relay I few thoughts that I feel are important. I am completely lost. Typing this paper in the dead of the afternoon with this horrid heat beating down reminds me that my household refuses to use air conditioning unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Both my parents drive Toyota Prius Hybrids, which get about 50 miles per gallon and have very low emissions. We have low flow showerheads and toilets. All of the lights in my house are compact florescent bulbs and use the least amount of energy possible. My parents are politically active; they call their representatives and senators constantly letting their thoughts be known. I still sit and worry. Watching Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth, really got to me. I care about nature, and this planet more than I could ever describe. As a result, it pained me deeply to watch this movie and realize how relaxed we all are about this situation. Have I done any actions that help? Yes, of course. Do I still feel like a lot more can be done? Yes, of course. I am constantly worried that I am not doing enough. Why am I not making the first move? Why am I not standing in the streets spreading the word? Why am I not marching in front of the White House demanding George Bush see this film? I don’t know. I don’t know why I haven’t made a move. I’m not sure why any of us haven’t made a move. We are all waiting for the next guy to step forward. “Well no one ELSE has done anything of any importance…so why should I?” Yeah I said that. How selfish right? I guess what I am trying to convey is: this is complicated! I felt inspired by Al Gore’s film. I was ready to end Global Warming. I was ready to march up to Mr. Bush and explain to him rationally what is happening to the world. I was ready to start an entire movement, insisting on policy change. But what did I do immediately after the movie? I got in my car, drove straight home, and turned on the television. Ah, the comforts of escaping reality. “There’s no impending doom, we are all just fine. Don’t worry about it. I love the smell of oil burning in the morning.” If my thoughts seem scrambled and incomplete, I apologize. The reason: I really care about this issue, and my thoughts tend to twist and turn the more I care about something. I guess the point is this: we ALL need to work together to fix this problem. It’s that simple. No more excuses, no more denial. That’s it. No more “war on terror”. No more “war on drugs.” Let’s have a “war on complacency” or a “war on oil dependency” or a “war on political bullshit that is ruining this country and our world”. Am I getting preachy? Well I set to write a simple response to Al Gore’s film, and what happens? I produce this rant of incoherent nonsense spoken by a liberal citizen’s voice that will never be heard. I will leave you with this: My incoherent rant of bullshit makes about just as much sense as every decision that has been made by this administration and its hell bent need to drive this country into the ground. |

| Not to bash on you man but I think you got that fact wrong. The earth used to be way hotter during the time of the dinosaurs. The reason why climate change for us today is so bad is that our lives are so adapted to our current weather patterns. Crops grow well in certain areas and rising earth temps mean more desertification of land and less crops grown. It also means flooding in places that are populated extremely densely. |

| The paper is really really underdeveloped and not polished. It looks like something that would be written on an internet forum, not in an english class.

| you need to chill mister ![]() yes global warming is happening but there is no hope for the human race we are simply a parasite living off of the earths resources and if the global warming dosent get us first in another couple thousand of years the "safe zone" that the earth is in from the sun is going to move and leave the earth behind and it will look something like mercury.....this is why scientists are looking to make mars a habital place for humans.....watch some discovery channel!!! nothing can be changed the human race is too ignorant and full of themselves to change ask some big CEO of a multi-billion dollar company about shutting down his comapny that is putting out gallons and gallons of waste and smog into the atmosphere to shut his factory down and youll get a kick in the ass and youll be sent home ......the world is not ready to change and im all for greenpeace im a member actually ....im very against the factors that are causing global warming but weve known about the threat of global warming for years and not many people care i guess what im trying to say is that nothing is going to be changed any time soon and definelty not in our lifetimes .......so dont worry about it were safe for the time being.... as for your childrens childrens children??? theyre screwed

That thing you said about the habitable zone - Wrong. I don't know where you heard that but there must have been some misunderstanding. When the sun starts to die, seven or so billion years from now, THAT'S when the habitable zone will move outwards, five times farther away than it is now. We'll be fine for a very, very long time in the habitable zone. And think about this - Technology is being improved every day. If humans hadn't invented the catalytic converter, the hydroelectric dam, etc, we'd probably already be in a much bigger mess than we are now. There IS hope, no matter what. We all got ourselves into it, we can all get ourselves out. Obviously we're not going to stop putting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere completely, but we can certainly make a big difference, and if it pushes the disastrous effects of global warming forward another 100 years, even 50, I'm all for it. FYI I love Discovery Channel. I'm a total geek stoner ![]()

| I would love to become a quasi-hermit and live off the land, how the Native Americans lived many years ago, just hike up into Montana or someplace desolate and set up a cabin and function with my own power, my own resources. It's funny, I think people are meant to live off the earth... it's like men are meant to live with the earth, not on earth. There is Global Warming today, and it doesn't need to be ignored! To curb the destruction we are causing, drastic measures need to be taken! HEY GUYS! Let's kill two birds with one stone: Completely eliminate vehicles and transportation that require petroleum oil. When this happens, our environment will be cleaner, and politicians who make billions from oil refining (BUSH) won't be in control anymore. Side note: No more invading poor countries for oil. Iraq didn't construct 9/11 -Al queda did. The terrorists are not in Iraq anymore. If this is really a War on Terror, we would be chasing al queda all over the world, but instead we are stuck where we do not belong. FORCING people to depend on natural and "earth-friendly" resources is a great idea! FORCING people to depend on petroleum from second and third world countries is a bad idea! Why do I say FORCING? Because we have no other choice! We need transportation to get to school, to make money at work, to feed our empty stomachs. Actually, well, there are a few of us out there who use french fry grease, etc. BUT WE NEED MORE OF THOSE PEOPLE! WOW! Isn't it also funny: The very one thing that EVERYONE needs to use is controlled by politicians and leaders in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, etc. and of course, OPEC. I'm tired of the bull crap! We've all heard the story: Rudolph Deisel invented an engine to run off of soybeans in the early 1900's, thinking that farmers could grow their own fuel. However, at the time, it was actually cheaper to buy petroleum than to grow and use soybeans. A century later, we need to expand our horizons to change the world for the better. I can understand how necessary it was for the United States to use oil for the past six decades, but now enough is enough! Politiks R WAk!! |
