Polar bear attacks woman at Berlin Zoo

* An adult polar bites woman several times after she plunges into the moat
* The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital
* It's unclear why the woman entered the bear habitat

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A polar bear attacked a woman at Berlin Zoo Friday afternoon after she climbed a fence and jumped into its habitat during feeding time, police said Saturday.

Zoo workers tossed rescue rings toward the woman to hoist her out and distract polar bears swimming nearby, said Goerg Gebhard, a Berlin police officer.

The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital, police said.

It's unclear why the woman entered the bear habitat, but police issued her a citation for trespassing.

I'm glad. What would make anyone jump into a BEAR habitat during FEEDING TIME?

Unless her baby was accidently tossed in there or she saw 1 million dollars sitting at the bottom of the moat, then she has no excuse.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "Good for her" but I would say that the woman wasn't very smart for jumping the fence and going into the bears territory, especially during feeding time. That just doesn't make sense to me. Glad to know the lady is okay. I bet she won't do that again.

Why would any SANE person jump into a polar bear's habitat? ESPECIALLY during feeding time?
It's a good thing that she's okay, but damn, that's her own fault.

This is actually not the first polar bear attack to a person that jumped fences to get a closer look. I just saw a past attack on Animal Planet yesterday. Only this particular attack, the polar bear had his big canine teeth driven into the woman's thigh.

It was very hard to watch. The bear finally let go, and people were able to get her to safety.

I wish people had more sense when it comes to animals. Especially wild animals, including zoo animals. They are not pets, and they can be dangerous, potentially fatally dangerous.

I saw a video of the rescue. She fall back into the water twice, becuase the rope broke.
