i wish he would just come out of the closet and represent pot too... oh well, it's probably not worth the damage to his career. maybe he'll become a pro-weed celeb after retiring. i can only hope.

He was a huge pussy when he 'admited" that doing it was a mistake. There was no reason for him to get in trouble in the first place. He was doing weed. OH NO!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!! A perfectly reasonable, INCREDIBLY ATHLETIC man was doing pot!? HOLY SHIT. He should have never apologized for it, and if was gunna go on for that interview anyway he should have just said 'so what, it's just weed." Who cares. I would have respected him a lot more because of that.

A lot of pro-pot celebrities don't have their careers damaged because they admited to or got caught smoking marijuana.

It was a mistake. He's a celebrity, but not one that can survive bad publicity of this kind and not lose millions in endorsements. I'd have done the same thing. People could call me a pussy all day. I'd just laugh all the way to the bank. I'd make every cent I could, retire, and then slap that NORML bumper sticker on my car.

I do think he handled the situation as kind of a pussy too. I mean, he didn't necessarily have to come out and say "So what? Its only pot." but he could have used the opportunity to possibly educate and show people that you can smoke pot and be one of the most successful people in the world. I mean Kellogg was the only company to drop him, and they lost millions in sale because of it.

I mean you could be a greedy pig and give in to all the pressure of pot being "bad" and more like hang your head in shame all the way to the bank. And if I ran NORML, and Phelps asked me for a sticker, I'd laugh in HIS face.

I dont know about you guys, but Id rather keep making millions of dollars off of endorsements and pander to the weed haters then lose all my endorsements over a drug.

I'd say that it's a major assumption on your part that he's in the closet. I've never seen anything to suggest that he's a pothead. Taking a toke at a party doesn't make you a habitual pot smoker. I find it very unlikely that an athlete of his caliber would regularly put a lot of smoke into his lungs. Anything that might reduce his oxygenation level would adversely affect his performance.

Well in that case, he could also just be an every now and then smoker. Takes a tokes during off season, or special occasions. Maybe in his younger days he toked quite a bit more?
Guess the point is none of us know his actual relationship with pot, and probably never will.

Just like what Buzzby says, we don't know that Phelps is a pot smoker. We just know he's tried it. What he did has not done anything for furthering marijuana reclassification other than bring media focus to Marijuana.
