| this town is like 5 mins from where i live. wish i could have found it first... Wisconsin law enforcement authorities remove 8,000 marijuana plants from Navarino Wildlife Refuge in Shawano County THE POST-CRESCENT • OCTOBER 15, 2009 TOWN OF NAVARINO — Law enforcement officers from nine agencies removed 8,000 marijuana plants from 12 grow sites in the Navarino Wildlife Refuge Tuesday in one of the biggest busts of its kind in state history. The operation also destroyed four separate areas described as work and campsites, and officials said there was evidence that marijuana had already been harvested from the operation. "An evaluation of the scene indicated that the criminal operation had been abandoned for some time, and that a substantial amount of marijuana had been harvested prior to law enforcement being alerted to its presence by an anonymous tip from a hunter who provided the coordinates of the area," Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright said in a press release. "It was one of the largest marijuana grow operations ever discovered in Wisconsin, and definitely one of the most detailed campsites," Wisconsin Atty. Gen. J.B. Van Hollen said. Wright said officers believe there are more growing sites in the vicinity. "This activity remains under investigation with (Tuesday's) activity being only one portion of a much larger inquiry. "These sites should be considered hazardous and individuals finding themselves in such surroundings should leave immediately. "If anyone has been in the area of the Navarino Wildlife Area this summer or fall and has seen anything abnormal please contact the Shawano County Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency. The eradication began at 6 a.m. and involved 78 law enforcement officers from state, federal and local agencies, Wright and Van Hollen said. Agencies included the Shawano County Sheriff's Office, Clintonville Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, Waupaca County Sheriff's Office, Oconto County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, with support from the Shawano County Emergency Government office and Clintonville Area Ambulance. Wright said photos of the operation would be posted on the sheriff's department Web site.
