| CBC News - Toronto - Boys-only grade school proposed for Toronto "The research is pretty clear that for some students, single-sex setting makes a big difference," he said. Spence said his data shows that boys act out more and get into much more trouble in the school system. "Boys are suspended far more frequently than girls. The gaps in terms of … achievement indicators is widening in terms of literacy and numeracy," said Spence.Boys-only classes and a boys-only school would provide a major benefit within the education system, said Spence. "The results we're getting for our boys right now just are not what they need to be." I don't know how I feel about this yet. What do you guys think, good idea or bad idea?

It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then?" |

| bad idea learning to interact with the opposite sex at a young age, in my opinion, is essential. if i didn't attend a co-ed school growing up i don't think i would have ever learned how to react to a woman's behavior. even if they taught "how to interact with the opposite sex" in school, there is nothing better than to experience it first hand (the awkwardness and everything). and i would probably be more aggressive or possibly violent in nature had it not been for having "girls" around. |

| Do you think you'd wind up smarter though? And is it worth it? |

| There's an interesting I don't know that I would separate them by sex in grade school, but I would be hugely in favor of all girl and all boy high schools, personally.

| Hmm, it's an interesting trade off. Is the chance for an improved educational environment worth the trade-off of a deteriorated social environment (defined here as the chance to interact with girls the same age as the boys)? I...hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I sort of lean towards the improved educational environment. |

| I don't know....the idea of separating the sexes because they somehow learn differently doesn't really sit very well with me. I am just wondering along what other lines we could determine how well one group learns with certain teaching methods vs. a different group. I am sure that some well thought out research exists with the issue but I have a real hard time accepting that separating the boys because they are more "rambunctious" or they learn differently.....it just sort of smells like a bit of stereotyping to me. What about the boys that aren't getting in as much trouble? Or the ones that find that they have more in common with girls their own age? One teaching method isn't going to work across the lines for each individual let alone believing that you can determine it by sex. It worries me.

| I went to an all guys high school for two years. I honestly didn't experience any problems interacting with the opposite gender. We had a "sister" school that was all girls nearby. We had various activities together, so the social aspect is still there. I mean, girls still exist.. they're not going to suddenly disappear if you attend an all boys school. I did feel that the environment was more goal-oriented than my other school, but that could be due to any number of reasons. I suppose if grade schools had a similar system set up with a sister school, I'd be in favor of the idea. However, completely separating guys from girls wouldn't be helping education at all, in my opinion. |
