Ok, then that makes sense.

What do you think of a person's right to own firearms when they have a prior conviction of a violent crime involving a firearm?

Also, I'm interested to hear your take on the right to carry a concealed weapon in a bar or club where only alcohol is served? Should both employees and patrons be allowed to carry them?

I have my own thoughts on these two questions, but perhaps you can shed a different perspective on it, since you seem to be pretty knowledgeable on the issue.

In most states, a felony conviction of ANY kind bars one from gun ownership. The only way to get this right back is, I believe, to petition the court that convicted you. In reality, a gun crime of any kind DOES bar you from firearms ownership, something I'm all in favor of. AS far as guns in bars/clubs go, I see no reason for patrons to be armed. I'm as pro-gun as one can get, but don't think a building full of people under the influence of alcohol should have access to guns. I've witnessed enough bar fights and seen people act completely irrationally during them. A gun in such a situation can't be a good idea. As far as armed security guards....i'm all in favor of it, as long as they are not allowed to drink on dutry under any ciurcumstances.

So as we don't hijack this thread, I invite you to "Freedom isn't free" a thread on gun control found in the politics subforum. Reading that, I'm sure you'll get a firm idea of what I'm about when it comes to the subject of an armed citizenry

Yeah, I hear you. I was being sarcastic. Everything that went on there was between the Clintons, and the whole impeachment charade was a joke. The guy lied about a blowjob... why was he under oath, anyway? Whatever.

All I was saying is that it's a little hypocritical to take one relationship that calls one candidate's character into question, and forget another. I know they're different situations, but something about drakster's post just irked me.

What little respect I had for Obama left when, convieintly immediately after Rev. Wright retireds, Obama publically stated he'd have left the church had Rev. Wright continued to preach there. Yet, weeks before, he said he couldn't abandom someone so close to him, and that just because they didn't share viewpoints didn't mean that the relationship had to suffer. Obama turned his back on his so-called "spiritual advisor" ONLY after the man had retired. Its pretty easy to say "I'd have left if...." after Rev. Wright was already gone. Thats like saying, "I would have won the lottery, if only I had picked the right numbers last night"
I was a little put off by this, but then I dug up the original quote, which is:

"Had the reverend not retired and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there at the church."

If he actually was going back on his relationship with the Reverend for political gain, I'd have less respect for Obama, but it appears as though Wright also made some sort of apology (which I can't find any articles for).

Quote:
Being a small town/ rural type of guy, you can be assured his little elitest comment about small town folks clinging to their guns and religion didn't fly with me either, espeically, when in his apology, he said something along the lines of "I only said what we all know to be true" or something along those lines. Of course, Hillary came out in support of gun rights immediately after Obama's fumble. I find this hilarious since her husband signed the assault weapons ban(which was a meaningless piece of legislation that basically banned guns for certain comestic features, not anything that made them inherently dangerous to either the shooter or the public at large, or that affected their basic operation. "Machine guns" which many people confuse with the so-called assault weapons have been heavily regulated since the 1930's), and Hilary herself purposed a 1000% tax on some handgun ammo. Don't be fooled....neiother Democratic candidate favors "gun rights". However, it being an election year, you can bet they'll put on a great charade. Wouldn't want to risk the votes of the 80 million legal gun owners now would they?
Yeah, it's this comment that he made which made me a little more disillusioned about Obama. It was a stupid thing to say, and if a speechwriter wrote that for him, he ought to be fired. The idea makes no sense. America's love of guns has been in our collective unconscious long before jobs were sent overseas. And, obviously, there's a bigoted feel to it. Still, I like Obama better than Hillary, so my mind hasn't been changed.
