Default [Action Alert] NJ Needs Sterile Syringe Access Now

New Jersey is now the only state in the nation with no access whatsoever to sterile syringes to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis C and other blood-borne diseases!Â* On July 17, Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner signed a bill allowing for syringe exchange in that state.Â* Just days before on July 13th, the Massachusetts legislature overrode a veto by Governor Mitt Romney passing legislation that allows for non-prescription sale of syringes in pharmacies. Â*

While other states have taken action to stop AIDS and save lives, New Jersey has refused to implement this proven AIDS prevention method.Â* The time has come for New Jersey to act! If you are a New Jersey resident please tell the governor and legislative leaders to take action to save lives now.Â* We must not lose one more life to this preventable disease.

New Jersey has the 5th highest number of adult HIV cases, the 3rd highest number of pediatric HIV cases, and the highest proportion of women infected in the nation.Â* New Jersey's rate of infection related to the sharing of contaminated syringes is almost twice the national average! Â*

Senate Bills 823 and 494 and Assembly Bills 1582 and 2839 would allow for the establishment of municipal syringe exchange programs and the non-prescription sale of limited numbers of syringes in pharmacies.Â*Â* The legislature and governor must take up this life-saving legislation as soon as they return to Trenton in the fall.

Please take a moment to send a fax to the Governor, Assembly Speaker and Senate President telling them to take action on this life-saving legislation.

Sincerely,

Roseanne Scotti

NJ has a big exchange program going....... it is called the "Jersey Shore" just go to any Jersey beach and walk along the waters edge...... within 100 feet of walking you can easyly pick up over 100 syringes, NO joke here, just the facts.......
