We did it! Generous donations from DPA supporters all over the country helped put a big roadblock in the path of California legislators who are trying to roll back reform and subvert the will of the voters.

After a hearing on September 14, 2006, an Alameda County Superior Court judge entered a preliminary injunction that will block bad changes to the state's treatment-instead-of-incarceration law, Proposition 36, while the court determines whether they are constitutional.

Earlier this year, Governor Schwarzenegger signed a bill, SB 1137, that would permit the jailing of Prop 36 participants who are engaged in substance abuse treatment. This is contrary to the intent of the treatment law approved by California voters in 2000, and would undermine a spectacularly successful program.

Your support helped DPA's legal team research the legal issues, recruit leading criminal justice experts to submit declarations to the court, draft motion and response papers, and conduct oral argument in the case--all of which proved crucial in securing the preliminary injunction.
