Several interesting drug-related stories have surfaced on the typicalInternet news sites over the last few days -- from Afghanistan's opiumcrops to Serbian customs seizing 133lbs of Heroin!

Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Withprofits from this spring's record opium crop fueling a broad Talibanoffensive, Afghan authorities say they are considering a onceunthinkable way to deal with the scourge: spraying poppy fields withherbicide.

Afghans including President Hamid Karzai are deeplyopposed to spraying the crop. After nearly three decades of war,Western science and assurances can do little to assuage their fears ofchemicals being dropped from airplanes.

This is all apparently the US's attempt at erradicating poppy crop production in Afghanistan. Feel free to read all about it.

Another interesting story on CNN which I'm sure most of us have heard about by now...

George Michael Found Slumped Over in Car... Again. Quoted from the article:

Popstar George Michael has been arrested and cautioned after being foundonce again slumped over the wheel of his car in London and inpossession of cannabis, British media said on Monday.The Sun tabloidsplashed the story that Michael had been arrested across its frontpage. It was his fourth motoring incident in eight months, includingthree involving him being asleep at the wheel, the newspaper said.
Apolice spokesman said a 43-year-old man was taken into custody onSunday, cautioned by police for having an illegal drug on him andreleased on bail pending inquiries on being unfit to drive.

Howmany people want to bet that if the exact same thing had happened herein the United States, to any regular old Joe Shmoe, he'd be locked upwithin a month serving 10 years? Funny how celebrities like George Michael, Paris Hilton and Mel Gibsonget a slap on the wrist and maybe a few years probation when it comesto driving drunk or smoking less-than-legal substances -- but Godforbid you're an 18-year-old kidwith $60 of weed on you... then your siblings get handcuffed, your doggets shot, and you're hauled off to jail like an animal. I guess itreally is true... "Those without the capital, get the punishment."
And in other international news, Serbian Customs Seized 133lbs. of Heroin:

Serbiancustoms officers seized Tuesday at the Macedonian border 133 pounds ofheroin, whose market value was estimated at $2.3 million. TheCustoms Agency in Belgrade said the officers uncovered the heroin,wrapped in 120 packages glued with tape and stashed in a specially made"bunker" in a German car at Presevo, the town on a main highway insouthern Serbia, close to the border with Macedonia.

Thearticle claims that the bust was made possible thanks to an"international exchange of data". I can't help but wonder how thatconversation went...
