We are at an important moment in the struggleto finally win real reform of the Rockefeller Drug Laws. I want toupdate you on some important recent developments, and ask for your help.The Spitzer administration seems to be off toa good start with regard to overall criminal justice reform. In thefirst few days of the new administration, Gov. Spitzer ended thenotoriously unfair telephone contract run by the Department ofCorrections and private phone companies. This contract ripped offfamilies of prisoners by charging extremely high fees for collect calls from prisons.By ending the contract, Gov. Spitzer did the right thing. He alsoplaced reform at the center of his agenda, which is a good sign.
Write the Governor now, and ask him to make real reform of the Rockefeller Drug Laws a priority.
We want Rockefeller Drug Law reform to be next on Spitzer's priority list. During the campaign, Gov. Spitzer came out in support of real reformof the Rockefeller Drug Laws. Former Senate Minority Leader, and nowLt. Governor, David Paterson, has long been a supporter of real reform,as has new Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. So we think the time is right.
But if we're going to win, we'll have to holdthe governor accountable to his commitment to support reform. Ourstrategy this year is to keep the Rockefeller Drug Laws a priority in the media; continue expanding the Rockefeller Drug Law reform coalition, Real Reform New York;educate the public through town hall meetings, presentations, workshopsand speaking engagements; and put pressure on the Assembly, Senate, andthe governor to pass real reform through actions, meetings, and letters.
Tell the governor you want him to support real Rockefeller reform.
This year's Rockefeller reform legislationwill be introduced sometime after February, and will start out in theAssembly. We'll let you know as soon as the bill gets moving.

• Send the Governor a fax, urging him to support real reform.
• Send this action alert to three of your friends, family, or co-workers, urging them to take action by faxing the Governor.
