Default CAN : Busting high drivers will have far-reaching effect

Busting high drivers will have far-reaching effect
6/28/08|Nanaimo Daily News| Opinion letter - Ralph Givens, Daly City, Calif.

Re: 'Prosecuting stoned drivers is a necessity' (Your Letters, Daily News, June 23).

Being "stoned" on marijuana does not automatically make someone a danger on the highway.

Marijuana use has not been found to be a cause of highway collisions. On-road driving studies funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation proved that marijuana smokers were safer drivers than teetotalers.

Other than hysterics from drug crusaders, there is no evidence that marijuana use is increasing the number of highway fatalities. Marijuana smokers tend to drive more slowly, more politely and more safely than others. This is a plus on the highways where aggressive drivers cause fatal accidents.

Will "drugged" drivers who pass an "impairment test" still be charged with a crime? It's worth noting that people with morphine pumps (indicating total addiction) have no restrictions placed on their driving. Will this new law change that?

Drug crusaders have never adhered to truth, logic and facts, so why expect any wisdom from the people who have destroyed whole countries for their insane drug policies.

I know that it is not considered cool in any way to drive while "impaired" but since the day I've been driving, I've been getting stoned.

I was smoking for a few years before I was driving. One of the first things I did with my new van was smoke a blunt in it.

No accidents since my second week of driving...

I also have driven stoned, on many occasions..The good thing about MJ is that you can usually tell when you have had too much to drive...and can be responsible about it, unlike alcohol. I personally drive slower, and am much more aware of my surroundings when I am stoned. I stay out of the fast lane to avoid pissing people off, which also cuts down on possible lane change accidents.

I don't smoke and then drive anymore but when I did I would sometimes catch myself driving under the speed limit, don't think I ever caught myself speeding while driving high on pot. I would keep checking the speed to make sure I was at the limit. From having a alcohol arrest in the past from driving, I don't drive under the influence of anything. I don't risk driving stoned and I don't drink and drive. I'm also more relaxed if i'm stoned and not driving anywhere.

This was a test that was done in the UK with marijuana and driving

Thank you! Being impaired by alcohol is much worse. A drunk driver killed my best friend when we were 16.

Again, thank you. Marijuana smokers are more careful, while alcohol drinkers drive more wrecklessly.

I'd love to know the answer to this question myself. I knew people that were on morphine pumps, and they were pretty messed up. I don't see how it's safe for them to be behind the wheel either.

Default What is "driving stoned"?

Making blanket statements about the safety of driving stoned is absolutely ridiculous. Impairment is dose-related, tolerance-related, and experience-related.

"It is completely safe to drive after consuming alcohol." This is probably true if the alcohol comes from drinking one beer. It would be dangerously untrue if the alcohol was a pint of vodka.

"It is completely safe to drive after consuming marijuana." This is probably true for an experienced smoker after smoking half a joint of mids. It would be dangerously untrue if the marijuana was 15 bong hits of White Rhino.

I've been a marijuana user for 40 years. I've driven after consuming moderate amounts of marijuana. I've also gotten much too high, even with my level of experience, to consider getting behind the wheel of a car. If you can get stoned enough that you can't stand up, you can get way too stoned to drive a car.

I love my bud, but if i got hit by someone smoking it, I would be just as pissed off as if it was someone drunk. Marijuana impairs you, and no one can doubt that. saying marijuana has not caused highway fatalities as a way of justifying being anything other than sober will driving is ridiculous. no one should drink, smoke, pop pills, snort, or shoot up and drive. lets use common sense around here and get around the technicalities.
