If this passes, it could very well be the final nail in coffin for prohibition. Most states are only holding on to prohibition because of the federal law.

This is most definately a step forward.
The next thing the news needs to tell the American people is that the Netherlands have banned tobacco but not pot. Knowing this info might get people to ask, "Why would the Netherlands do something like that?"
I would say that seeing the push for pot on CNN is most favorable to the tokers.

This is great news, as your neighbour to the north living in Canada I hope my government follows suit... And like countless others have mentioned in this thread, even if the bill gets shut down (which I am hoping it does not) it will be a great win for marijuana users and activists all over north america, and the world for that matter, as finally a little bit of light is being shined on this topic that has been swept under the rug for decades now.

Quote:
House Resolution 5843, titled the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008, would express support for "a very small number of individuals" suffering from chronic pain or illness to smoke marijuana with impunity.
That couldn't be more wrong. The act would legalize use of marijuana by 24,000,000 Americans who are already using it recreationally and otherwise. As for medical marijuana patients, they aren't "a very small number of individuals". There are hundreds of thousands of them, both in states that have legalized medical marijuana and those that haven't.

Quote:
If HR 5843 were passed, the House would support marijuana smokers possessing up to 100 grams -- about 3½ ounces -- of cannabis without being arrested.
Now you've got it!

This bill has been proposed. It's not likely that it will pass, not with most of our reps having their campaigns funded by anti-marijuana lobbyists and not with GWB's Presidential veto.

GWB's Presidential veto
......Can we just hurry up and impeach him?

Anyways. This is also been a big thing for CNN's ratings. They have founds when talking about marijuana, that the ratings have gone up in that brief time frame. That is big news as well, and CNN is seeing the trend. I also found it funny when I watched it, Don Lemon was breaking the news, and he brought in someone else to say that, "They have had massive amounts of emails for people who are in favor of legalization."

Today, one of there top stories is...

Marijuana bill sparks debate among iReporters - CNN.com

I think the idea is to get it out there now, and get people start talking about it now, so that even though it won't pass this time, ity has a better chance of passing next time.

Additionally, I read that it's not expected to "go forward" until next year from a link on Norml's In the Media site, but I don't know if that meant this particular proposal, or just generally speaking they don't think legalization will go forward until Bush is out.

Ive been a three times a day smoker since I was sixteen. I'm now 29 and the General Manager of a Saab dealership who is directly responsible for the welfare of about 15 employees and I do a damn good job. I don't understand why no one has ever asked the house of representatives why the hell cigarettes are legal and marijuana is not. The only ammo that anti-marijuana activists really have is that "marijuana is a gateway drug." Now Im sure there are a lot of tokers on this site so be honest when I ask this next question. The first time you experimented with a mind altering substance was it marijuana or a freaking beer? Just goes to show you that the real gateway drug is alcohol
