| morphine-cannabis combo may boost painkilling response 08-13-2008 | NewsPostOnline.Com U.S. researchers have come up with an idea of using the combination of morphine and cannabis so as to better the painkilling responses. Joseph Holtman and Peter Crooks at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington say that teaming them up could allow doses to become smaller, reducing the possibility of addiction. However, combining the drug had some drawbacks, reports New Scientist. A simple mixture of the drugs produces unpredictable results because the body absorbs them at different rates. To overcome that limitation, the researchers came up an idea of binding the two drugs together using a linking molecule such as an ester. When the body snips this linking group, both drugs are released at the site where they are needed. That should ensure both drugs would be absorbed at the same rate, making it easier to work out doses for patients. |

| I've found that cannabis enhances the effects of many other drugs. My therapy for a sleep disorder works because cannabis turns another drug, which, by itself, produces mild sedation, into a knock-out pill.

| I guess I've always noticed increased effects from painkillers of various types when combined with marijuana. I was looking for enhancement of other effects at the time, but the pain reduction was certainly evident as well I have ummm...chronic , for lack of a better term, knee pain that has never been diagnosed, ev3en though I' ve seen Dr's since early childhood concerning it. It sucks, because peole are hesitant to prescribe anything for the pain since it apprearently doesn't exist if they can't diagnose it While admittedly not my primary reason for using cannabis, the benefits are both noticed and appreciated, and it helpfulness is definityely appearent when i run out.

| Interesting. I've used many opiates and marijuana together and it always seems to be a 1-2 combo: ANY pain I was feeling would be absolutely out the window and I was replaced with a sluggish inebriated idiot. ![]() This is a very potent combination and although I can't say I don't find the effects 'miserable' (some do, especially the nausea) a morphine-juana seems like it might hurt the cause to prove marijuana as legitimate medicine on it's own merit. When people think morphine they think 'potent pain medicine, often abused'. What if all the people of 'Reefer madness' argue marijuana users are trying to change MJ's molelcular structure to make it an even more 'potent, life destroying drug' or something to that nature? I mean, most of them don't even want to accept marijuana has countless medicinal benefits on it's own....

| Wow I think there is definitely something behind this, combining these two would without a doubt be effective. The only problem I see would be convincing lawmakers and the federal powers that be to allow doctor's to prescribe this medicine. |

| It kind of seems like overkill. Cannabis was, until the 1937 tax act, preferred by many Doctors for pain management. Not physically addictive. Essentially non-toxic. Effective. In cases of severe burns, or cancer I can see the reasoning behind a "Brompton Coctail". (Minus the scads of off topics contained in that!) Pot should be allowed as a Physician's first line of defense. If it doesn't ease the patient's discomfort, then try something a little stronger. |
