| Turnbull mulls a misspent youth 9/26/2008|The Sydney Morning Herald|Selma Milovanovic MALCOLM TURNBULL last night became the first Liberal leader to admit he had smoked marijuana. On ABC1's Q&A program the host, Tony Jones, began asking: "Have you ever…" when Mr Turnbull headed off the question by saying: "smoked dope? Well, yes I have." He said he had smoked marijuana in his much younger days and now thought it was a very bad idea because the drug could be damaging. "Many people have [smoked it]," he said, before adding it was a mistake to do so. Mr Turnbull laughed off a remark by Jones that he had made history by becoming the first Liberal leader to admit to smoking the drug. An Opposition frontbencher, Tony Abbott, had admitted to a "half-hearted puff" during a rugby tour to the US, and the Treasurer, Wayne Swan, and Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, have said they smoked the drug in their university days. Mr Swan said that smoking marijuana as a student at the University of Queensland in the 1970s was not "a Mick Jagger experience", and that unlike Bill Clinton and Tony Abbott, he inhaled.

| Another politico turned hypocrite! ![]() Why can't a politician say something like "Yeah I used it. It was fun, harmless and I don't think it should remain illegal." Gary Johnson doesn't count. He's been (unfortunately) out of office for years. ![]() There have to be members of parliament, congress, whatever, that smoke. It would take a lot of balls for them to get off the back benches and come out in favor of legalization. (Not to mention the legal ramifications...) Still, I really wish someone would take that risk and make things right. Too much to hope for, but hey, I can dream................. |
