| Sorry I haven't been real attentive to this forum lately, moved and my superduperfast connection has been replaced with a superduperslow one... This came by way of Doc Zombie, thought you might get a laugh from it... Do Rightwing Donars To Profit-Driven 'Prog/LibWebsites Influence Their Content? Source: The Smirking Chimp Message Board Aah- Bet you didn't know that much of the funding that keeps your favorite so-called liberal websites in the black- that advertize a left slant within their pages- are donated to by a wide array of wingnuts, gunsickies, Republican dirty-tricksters, narcs, and pro-military family types. Present company excluded (I'm beginning to appreciate the value of the Smirking Chimp- the number of sites that allow truly controversial topics to be posted- like the recent 'Are US Troops War Criminals' thread- are becoming farther and fewer between), you need only to scan any opening page for the inevitable 'please donate' insert prominently displayed for the 'eager to please' member to notice and hopefully to act upon. I'm sure many of the contributors make their donations in the fond hope that by doing so they will be contributing to a better world. Perhaps that's what the various suspect site developers initially believe, themselves. And there's no reason to think that any more than a relative few left-oriented websites use misrepresentations to entice givers into giving. But what if a site developer is less than savory when it comes to who (s)he takes money from (and what if (s)he is losing her shirt and must have an infusion of cash to stay afloat?)? And what if a quid pro quo developes where the donar insists on having editorial control of the message board, for instance, in exchange for a substantial financial boost? Sound farfetched? Only if it weren't so. There are three such sites in operation today, that I know about. They are MotherJones.com, Marijuana.com, and a little electronic cesspool with the improbable name of democraticunderground. All try to appeal to a youthful audience (inexperience is what the cons prey upon), but none have ever been eager to allow any more than a conventionally liberal viewpoint- must be for Dean or Clark or else- to come to the fore. However, a figurative red carpet is instantly rolled out for the most venal right-crap (disguised as moderate Democratic fluff) to ever disgrace a political internet forum. It's then been my observation that anyone who tries to counter the fascist rantings suffers the probability of getting banned or censored- yes, I'm talking about you and you and you (see above). So I started thinking about the whys and the howfores of these arrangements. So I went to democraticunderground.com, first, and contacted the owner of the site and told him of my intention to give his site a thousand dollars, but that I wanted an ironclad guarantee that I and 'my rightwing' views would never be censored or banned. He agreed- and even opined that the little ****s (current members) who had the gall to challenge me would have their memberships yanked (the suck was obviously thinking about future donations and was trying to impress me with his zeal)-and I told him I would get back to him. Approximately the same events unfolded at MotherJones and Marijuana.com- I portrayed myself as a drugcop at Marijuana.com and a Zionist oil company executive at MotherJones- with approximately the same results as were had at demoncraticundeground. I sincerely hope that these revelations don't turn anyone off to the concept of giving. But it is important to know who one is dealing with in the land of political commentary and opportunism. As I alluded to before, there are plenty of worthy sites that will take your contribution and will continue to allow a free range of expression (I'm now pretty sure SC is one)- despite contrary efforts by the unsavory site operators who I investigated and those who would pay to post fascist ideology and shape the opinions of unwary members. Please post your comments. Source Link: The Smirking Chimp Message Board
