South Haven administrator quits after marijuana flap

SOUTH HAVEN -- Facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, South Haven High School's assistant principal, Pat Conroy, resigned Friday, Schools Superintendent Dave Myers said.

Conroy, 52, was arraigned on the charge Friday in Seventh District Court in South Haven and pleaded not guilty, court officials said. If convicted, he could could be sentenced to up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. He was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond pending a pre-trial hearing scheduled for March 9.

Police said Conroy told them he placed marijuana in a student's locker last year, hoping the boy, whom he suspected was a drug dealer, would be expelled.

Conroy had been on paid administrative leave since police raided his high school office Feb. 9 and found several bags of marijuana and assorted pills in his desk. He told police the drugs had been confiscated from students over the 4 1/2 years he has been assistant principal. He was hired in August 1999.

Myers said Conroy notified district officials Friday and told them he was resigning immediately.

In his police report, South Haven Deputy Police Chief Tom Martin said Conroy told him that last year he placed some of the marijuana from his office in the locker of a male high school student he strongly suspected was a drug dealer. He said he was hoping the drugs would be found during a police dog search of the school and would lead to the boy's expulsion.

The plan didn't work, because the drug dog did not pick up the scent of the marijuana during the search, Conroy told police.

The marijuana found in Conroy's desk was in 10 small plastic bags, and the total weight of all the drug was less than an ounce, said Police Chief Rod Somerlott. Some of the bags had identifying tags with names of students on them, but others did not, Somerlott said.

Conroy told police he kept the drugs in his office so he could bring them to school board student expulsion hearings to show as evidence if necessary. But school board President Ed Bocock said he does not recall ever seeing drugs brought to an expulsion hearing by Conroy, and the district has a policy stating that police must immediately be notified that drugs have been seized at the school, and that the drugs will be turned over to police.

Conroy told police he came up with the idea of placing marijuana in the student's locker early last year after several locker searches by the South Haven Police Department's drug dog, Herbie, turned up no drugs at the school.

The superintendent said Friday the district plans to fill Conroy's position.

The district has two assistant high school principal positions. Conroy was the dean of students, and the other assistant principal is the athletic director.

"We think it's a critical position, and we will look everywhere (to find a new assistant)," Myers said.

I am personally aware of a case JUST like this right here in Gerogia, but it never made it to the media, and I cannot jump on it due to demands of confidentiality. Young people - young black men in particular - are being set up and destroyed by reefer mad school principals. And marijuana prohibition is the tool being used to do it.]

Multiple bags of marijuana would be considered 'intent to distribute' by most 'standards'. Planting a bag for a targeted student is distribution.

How many other lives has this corrupt human messed with over the years...?

People who don't 'do' drugs doesn't make them decent people, it simply means drug consumption is not part of the equation when it comes to inflicting harm and committing crimes, or that obtaining drugs isn't their motive for henious behaviour, although this is a reason frequently envoked for why people commit crimes.

Quite frequently drugs do not harm people, it's people who harm people. It kinda reminds me of the 'witch hunts' of not so long ago. Often, people were found guilty of being a witch simply based upon the word of another, without any tangible proof. Dislike of another was often the motive for putting a person in 'hot water'.

The plot sickens...

This makes me sick. They knew full well that this kid would have been ruined for life had the drug dog actually found the stash. But for what? For something he didn't even do? Oh.. the principal had a suspicion the boy was a drug dealer.. oh, whew... man, think of what would've happened if the principal didn't act! I mean.. the boy.. he could've stayed in school.. and.. got an education..

Protecting the welfare of children my ass. I want to see this guy brought up on charges of stealing, withholding evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child. As well as slander.

This is an epedemic, indeed. It's like a little papercut which has become infected and is begining to ooze. Everyday I am trying to figure out how I can keep working within the Public School System and not let fear get the best of me. (Though I'm not as stupid as this guy. Why in the hell he would keep that crap in his office is beyond me.) Why in the hell he would plant drugs in a students locker is also unimaginable to me.

Anyone hiring a lobbyist with a starting salary of around $37,000 plus benefits?

This is the deal I have seen firsthand - and cannot talk about as it came up in a therapy case. The boy is black and the principal - or assistant Principal - has rairoaded the boy - even actually assaulted him. It just outrageous but they have kept it out of the media.

I have advised the family - until I am blue in the face - to get a lawyer and have advised them this is bigger trouble than they know. It's a black boy's word against a white Assistant Principal.

Even the people in the Juvenile Justice office processing the charges realize something is horribly wrong - we had a long talk about that. If I had their e-mail, I'd forward a google news search to them.

Reefer madness is Fascism. That is not hyperbole, or exxageration. It is a textbook defintion of "either you accept the lies of reefer madness or you are the enemy." "No red ribbon - yer a terrist" (not a typo). It really and truly is this way.

No word yet as to the race of the boy targeted in Michigan, but a box of donuts and a latté says he is black.

The Assistant principal should be fired, the school board sued and the local police need to be investigated and audited to see just how much they knew about this.

And as always Marijuana Prohibition is vastly more important than people want to realize. It's bloted out of the media, and whn something like this happens - see the headline: it's already being downplayed with language.

These children are being f*cked, plain and simple. These Prinicpals and Assisatas want to make a resumé on a false premise of "protecting the children".

I know everyone likes to pretend that the Democrats and the Republicans are different, and they ARE on some issues. On drugs and terrorism (and by default extension, free speech and other guaranteed freedoms), however, they are just two hands of a single puppet-master. John Kerry was George W. Bush's frat brother at Yale for Christ's sake! If I recall right, he admitted to having smoked marijuana before but his open policy is the same as every president for the past 30-40 years (excepting Jimmy Carter): further perpetration of the drug war. It's simple, the end objectives are money and power (often the same thing), Republicans and Democrats just go about getting that money and power differently. The word "liberal" is based on the latin word "liber", which means "free/freedom". Being a liberal has nothing to do with being a Democrat or a Republican, since neither have done much to further true freedom and both have piled the laws on and turned the government into a giant babysitter for our once-proud nation of consenting adults. Oh well, I'm just ranting aimlessly by now, the point at the beginning was this:

Do not vote for John Kerry in the hopes that he will represent you better than Bush. He'll pull the same **** Bush does, he'll just be sneakier about it.
Ralph Nader is a lot closer than either major candidate, don't focus on "electable" or not, electability is decided by each and every one of us. Vote for the guy if you agree with his policies, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

hi i am a student at south haven high school and just happened to find this site on a google search. i think that it is sick that there would even be a site for pot heads. i don't think that very much of you even know what you are talking about. Have you met the guy? No. I will tell you what. The police didn't like the fact that their dog, "Herbie" didn't pick up on a drug scent...it makes them look bad...so they twist it around and use yellow journalism to put the spot light on conroy. he put the drugs in an EMPTY EMPTY EMPTY locker that was registered to a SUSPENED STUDENT......because he was suspicious that THE DOGS WEREN"T DOING A GOOD JOB>>>NOT BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING TO FRAME A STUDENT. I know THIS FOR A FACT...please try to be conciderate of people when posting things that you are not aware of all the information to, it can really make you look stupid...thanks
