| CHRONIC PAIN FROM HELL - Seven or MORE Ways to Get Through the Day with Medical Marijuana by 'Jana" | February 19, 2004 Dear Dr. Z: (Yes it’s ME, and I’m in pain again) As you probably remember, my pain-ridden husband is in the midst of waiting for 2 more weeks for his 2nd opinion appointment with one of the most well-renown Neurosurgeons at one of the leading hospitals in Massachusetts. Now if he can just get there without an ambulance, we’re in like Flynn. His condition only worsens by the hour; he is losing his equilibrium often, needs help getting up if he bends down, is getting extremely despondent at the thought of maybe never going fishing again. His sense of humor is thin, which worries me the most. He’s always been a stand-up comic. Hell, laughter is almost our best medicine. If you get my meaning. It broke my heart this afternoon when he got down on his hands and knees to build a fire for me, and then could not get up without extreme duress. All day he’s talked about suicide. But still, he REFUSES to give up on life and pushes himself beyond limits. His hips and legs are going and hard to move. He says he felt another disc ‘let go’ about a week ago. He now needs a walker. Today he woke in such pain in his neck, he bawled his eyes out for a couple of hours (had the TENS unit up almost all the way before he could feel the shocks), all the while I’m begging him “lets just jump in the old Toyota and head out to the ER”. I told him they have drugs there that they can give him to knock him out. With this kind of pain, it’s all you can do. And then he had a cough, and with each cough, his neck got worse. But still he could not muster up the energy to even think about sitting and waiting in that kind of pain. You know the ER. But there is some good news. We do have our medicine of choice, but believe me, if not for his smoking pot, there would be NO living with him. Imagine, if you will, what it would feel like to have your 2 carotid arteries in a vice grip if even for an instant. Or getting circumcised with a switchblade. Or lightning striking your every nerve. I think you get the picture. The other good news is we can still go out in our back yard and bar-b-que a steak and watch a beautiful sunset together. We don’t live in Afghanistan, or Iraq, we still cook our gourmet food together, if Don can bear to stand at the sink for any length of time, and that’s a big IF. But HEY, we have our eyesight, our hearing, our little house in the woods, and a computer sitting next to a huge fireplace where I can look out this huge window and see all the birds. SO MUCH to look forward to. And what could be better than the chance to kick Bush’s ass out of the White House, but that’s a story for another SmirkyChimp day. That’ll be the highlight of my year, matter of fact the highlight of the last 3 years of torture. Geeze, Doc, first we had Bonzo, now the Chimp. What next? I swear we ARE REGISTERED TO VOTE, and if I have to wheel Don in to the polls in a wheelbarrow, guess who’s gonna be there? LIFE, what a beautiful place to be. [zombienote: Thanx, Jana!]
