Default DEA defends America against 'genetically engineered' marijuana.

DOZENS ARRESTED IN DEA POT RING BUST
KFMB.com | 03-22-2004

Authorities announced the breakup Monday of a regional criminal ring that cultivated and distributed large amounts of highly potent marijuana.

A six-month, multi-agency probe headed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration netted two dozen arrests during searches of 25 cannabis-growing sites in San Diego County, DEA Special Agent Michael Vigil told reporters.

Seventeen of the suspects were due to appear in federal court this afternoon. The alleged traffickers' names were not immediately available.

The busts resulted from a tip that reached investigators last October.

Most of the cannabis, which was genetically engineered to be considerably stronger than ordinary marijuana, was grown in rental properties in such residential areas as Del Mar, Mira Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos, Vigil said.

"And (it was) being sold for between 4,000 and 5.500 (dollars) per pound," he added.

One of the cultivation sites was a short distance from Mira Mesa High School, according to the DEA.

If by 'genetically engineered' they mean cannabis which has been grown for its genetic qualities and perhaps hybridized with other strains of choice, then they would be correct; though the way they put the phrase makes it seem like these growers are using some fancy scientific process to alter the entire chemical makeup of the plant.

Oh, and I would love to get a pound for $4000

EDIT - Uh, what was I thinking, I would HATE to get a pound for 4k, that's bogus, I don't pay anywhere near that, try $3k. I must have been high off that NL when I wrote this

It is no more "engineered" than Mendelssohn's famous peas we all learned about in high school biology class, or the Doberman Pincher.

Simple manipulation of desired qualities over time via selective breeding.

They like the term "engineered" becasue it makes it sound like Monsanto has been involved genetically MODIFYING" the plant like the GMO corn that is so unpopular around the world.

It's not "frankenweed" but watch for the DEA to adopt some version of that term. It fits with calling a grow op a "marijuana manufacturing lab".

Liars.

Default Dammit!

I'm gonna have to go ahead and say "aw, dammit!" I've lived in San Diego since I was 8, I moved away last April and I'm planning on moving back down there in a few months. *sigh* I suppose supply will be down, which is gonna raise prices quite a bit. I just hope they only busted 25 low-level dealers (it sounds like a bigger accomplishment to call it a "pot ring") and missed the major growers and suppliers. Well, I send good luck and my best wishes to the businessmen who lost their freedom Monday, may Saint Jesus Malverde, the Patron of Drug Trafficking bless you and watch over you...

I would love to sell a pound for $4000.

That is a ridiculous price. That equates to $250 per ounce. More if their 'estimated price' were to be anywhere in that bracket up to $5,500.

Do the DEA have ANY idea what they're talking about? Guaranteed this was just a good breed of marijuana with higher than average THC levels due to proper care and breeding.

And one of the sites was close to a high school. How close, exactly? And how does this at all affect the high school - criminals are not going to put up a sign on their front lawn... "Weed sold here! Please come in!" They will attract as little attention as possible. Staff and parents are just as likely as students to be walking by the school as students! That is implying a false target market by proximity.

Doc Zombie - I'm afraid you may be right. Misinformation that bad has to be the result of sheer fearmongering over public. It seems to me the interest in the general public's well being is falling sharply to the interest in maintaining funding for certain subdivisions of the DEA itself.

Isn't the proper term for what the DEA is using called Newspeak or Doublethink? It's used to create a vague an unclear description of something, which totally negates the amazing vocabulary we have to properly describe a situation. Just like all the speeches a politician gives, they try and be as vague as possible, leaving out as much factual information but still confusing people while doing it. I think it's doublespeak, something or other, can't think right now

of course the DEA and any agency is going to overestimate the cost of something. Awhile back they said they busted a $1.2million dollar grow op or whatever and seized xxx lbs of weed. Don't remember the exact numbers for cost or lbs, but people here worked it out to like $7K a lb or something. I don't beleive any of the numbers that they give out, and yes their wording is used to make it sound like something bigger than it actually is. People will think (this is what they are hoping):
ohh this isnt a grow op, this was a manufacturing lab. Like someone stated above. They just want average people who aren't going to think about it or know very much to think it is something is isnt, so they seem like the big heroes.

The school thing matters because any bust within 1000 feet of a school is considered a more serious offense. Doesn't sound like much, but it could be the difference bewtween probation and fine and/or a few days in the clink and a mandatory minimum sentance of 2 yrs+

LEO is concerned with one thing: self-glorification at the expense of demonizing people who use weed (even responsibly).

Default drug bust

sadly enough all the guys growing what every one in san diego call's the "P-91" got popped. they weren't lying about the price being between 4000 and 5500 and i normally pay about 3,200 to 3,600 for a single p which is considered decent in san diego, but the stuff they had was on that other level. It still won't affect the work that comes around in diego but all the really good head smoke that people were charged 60 an eigth and 340 a zip for that all the dealers would pick up to just smoke is now gone -=[
